| American's Religous Test, and A respect for the Of |
As I stated yesterday I went to a town hall meeting with my Congressman Tim Johnson who, even though he took offense to being referred to as “from the right”, wore his Christianity like a badge during the entire meeting all the way up to having to excuse himself at a little after six in the evening so he could make it to church. During the hour long Hate Obamafest several ladies got up and with sad, tearful tones of voice talked about the horror of Government funded Abortions in the Healthcare Bill. Sadly Tim the “Tool” didn’t say things like, “well ma’am don’t worry that isn’t in the bill” he just reinforced the possibility of a slippery slope that could lead there and how he himself was staunchly pro-life, except of course for Illegal Immigrants, according to Tim they can just go and die for all he cares. He even said, ‘I know they are people I just don’t believe the hard working American people should have to pay for them’, which I find funnily Un-Christian, I can’t imagine, if it is the Christ that is described in the Bible, he would inquire whether or not you had a citizenship card before he would help you or heal you or feed you. Anyway my point is Tim Johnson proudly made the point over and over that he was a deeply religious man, my guess being you can trust him because he loves Jesus or something like that. However in our Constitution it states in Article VI, section 3; The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States. This I think would demonstrate that our Founding Fathers absolutely did not want to play religious finger wagging at each other when it came to public office. However I would put forth the premise that anyone trying to run for public office as an atheist, agnostic, or just a secular person with no faith would not win, (with the exception of a few very open minded places in America) because of some irrational belief in America that being one of the faithful somehow says something about the content of your character. I hope for the day when we stop asking what anyones religious affiliations are when running for office, and look forward to a day when America wants the best and the brightest in office and not those who love Jesus the most.
When I was growing up my father who was a moderate Democrat, well today they’d say he was a liberal but anyway, he served his country in the Military as I have also, taught me in regard to authority such as your superior officers or holders of public office like Congressman, Senator and especially the President, that even if you do not respect the man you should respect the office. I for one can say that I struggled with this notion during the 8 years of Bush hell, but unlike the nutty right I never once advocated death to George or over throw of the Government, yet the right seems to be incapable of this simple concept. We live in a democracy and have elections one side wins the other loses, if you lose you get out the vote and try next time, you do not pick up your gun and threaten revolt because your guy lost! I was disgusted by Senator Chuck Grassley’s town hall the other day when an old bastard got up and said, “I’d take a gun to Washington if enough of you’d go with me”. Fucking Bush stole one election and then manipulated the country to get a victory in another but we on the left did not think it was necessary to destroy our nation just because we didn’t get our way. For Christ sakes, who is the rational reasonable patriot here, the person who believes in a civilized system of government or the children who cry and want to kill people when they didn’t get things their way. In the town hall meeting I was at, I heard several crazies in the audience talking about how we needed to revolt against the government and so on. It was sad and scary at the same time. I wish civil debate and agreeing to disagree could make a comeback in America because without it I fear we are all screwed.
Finally we come to the Philosopher of the Week, Richard Bach, who wrote, “I gave my life to become the person I am right now. Was it worth it?” A great question to ask yourself once in a while it helps put things in prospective. Bach also said, “If your happiness depends on what somebody else does, I guess you do have a problem.” Never relinquish your happiness to others, your control over yourself is the most precious gift given to you so cherish it and always remember your life belongs to you and you get to decide what you are going to do with it, and if anyone else wants power over you then they are not your friend they are your enemy. Well friends I have no desire to control anyone but me, and until tomorrow goodbye…
