thoughts on labels
(I attempted this entry earlier, but due to technical difficulties I lost the post. And given I'm lazy and don't feel like rewriting the whole thing, this is in fact the condensed version.)

I was thinking about labels earlier this week. A friend of mine, well sort of a friend, always says "smile emo kid" and I severely dislike it. I do not like being called emo, even if they are joking. Seriously, I loathe it with every fibre of my being.

Anyway, it lead me to think about why we label others and why we label ouselves. I came to the conclusion that we as society feel safe when we allocate ourselves to those categories. We find a place where we fit and where others fit and we feel consoled by it. I don't know, its like a safety net? If something goes wrong you have a group of "like minded" individuals to turn to. Co-miserators even?

But at the same time we hate labels as society, and I figure its because it limits us at the same time. There is no way one label can fit anyone, as we are more than that. I am more than a indie folk listener, I am more than a dramatist and more than just a writer (more like aspiring writer...) and yet.... I would like to think of myself as somewhat like a philosopher, a daydreamer or a hippie even. Those are so restrictive and yet... there they are.

I think it strange that we are so repulsed and yet so drawn to such things as labels.
