| Lyric of the e-Meanderer (A Poem) |
I felt that the poem I wrote in my community profile was deserving of an author's/reader's commentary, so I've decided to feature it in a blog post. And so, it follows . . .
Lyric of the e-Meanderer | by Octav Esteves
Wand'rin' through online co-'munities
And tarryin' 'til the moment I'm jeered,
For practicin' tol'rance and em-pathy —
Qualities which I revere —
By elders whose le'el o' matur-ity
Falls scores o' leagues short o' my own.
You'll see me 'round, most assur-edly,
In search o' the site I'll call home.
Now, I'm not one to wallow in the ol' self-pity;
You won't find me sportin' a frown.
For I've made it my vow to ne'er stop quittin',
So I guess I won't be settlin' down.
Author's Commentary
Written in the format of a lyric poem, it's an olde country take on an age-old dilemma, but adapted to fit a modern and particularly relevant context; specifically, it is our context, my dilemma, and the very reason you've discovered me here. I am the narrative voice of the poem, first recounting my journey-turned-mission through online community websites (much like, but not yet including, this one), and then shedding some light on the nature of my personality and character. In the final verse I give context to the principle that I've chosen as my alias (never stop quitting).
It has been set to music in the style of an olde country song, a decision which contradicts with the modern context in which the poem is presented. At the same time, however, I think it successfully manages to reinvent our perception of the olde country wanderer in a new and creative way. I won't be sharing the tune with you, but feel free to make one up for yourself as you read through . . . if you're really feeling bored, that is!
Please let me know what you think.
