My first night in Alaska I cried…like a little girl.
I arrived at the barracks alone in the middle of the night. I was shown to an empty room and issued linen and a pillow. I made my bed and sat on it wide awake because I slept the whole flight there.
There was dead silence.
I realized I didn’t have a friend in a thousand miles of me. Literally. For the first time in my life I was completely on my own. This place was dark 20 hours a day. It was covered in ice and snow and below freezing. Fucking horrible. To top it off, I knew in a few weeks, I’d be on a silver jet headed to some stinking desert where everyone wanted to cut my head off with a dull knife and post it on the internet. A place where I would see a dead body for the first time, and then countless others. A place where I would have to look down the sights of a rifle and see a human being instead of a plastic target. A place where I would likely kill or be killed for reasons I didn't know or frankly, even care.
It’s terrifying for a kid to realize that he would be going to a combat zone the same year he graduated high school.
I cried…like a little girl...and chain smoked...and socked the entertainment center a few good times.

Keep your head down and follow your commands. I pray you will be okay.
