 October 14-17
Before we get into this week's content, here's a link to an article I found Monday morning on cnn.com. The article deals with the idea that if Senator Obama were a Muslim, things would be different, but SHOULD they? Something to think about... Here it is.

TUESDAY: We discussed the idea of DIVERSITY....when you look around, you see people who don't look exactly like you, who don't dress exactly like you, and when you hear people speak, they don't always sound just like you or think the same as you. This is exactly what has been going on in the world for so long. I was happy to hear that many of you seemed to really grasp the things I was talking about in class. I hope that the ideas of different family styles made sense, even if some of them were unbelievable to you in today's context. I also hope that you all were able to make that connection between way back when and today's world.

WEDNESDAY: Today we wrapped up our discussion of the notion of extreme diversity among many African villages, and got into the slave trade. The important thing I want you all to understand again is that at first, the slave trade was ECONOMICALLY-BASED, NOT a result of racism. That idea would come later, which is something we will discuss later this week.

Extra credit points to ponder:
1)Why do we still celebrate Columbus Day if, in fact, he did not discover America?
2) When did slavery and the slave trade become an issue of race?

THURSDAY: Today we discussed the slave trade. Know the triangular trade inside and out. Who was involved? Who gained what? It's important to know this information; it will be covered again in your studies!!!

Also, if you have any questions, start sending them along to me (Mr.Swingle@gmail.com). I would love nothing more than to answer questions so that you all are better-prepared for Wednesday's test.

Below is a link to eyewitnesshistory, which has an article describing conditions on a slave ship. Along with that, there are some pictures that shed some light on how living arrangements were on these ships (specifically, check out the cross-section of sleeping arrangements).

Slave Ships.

PBS.org also has a lot of information on the topic of slavery. In class, I mentioned that some slaves were thrown overboard. Turns out, some of them were alive when this happened! Why is that? Well, water and food may have gotten scarce and so, instead of having people starve to death, slave traders avoided this problem by tossing live slaves overboard. Check it out here.

Here's a picture of the triangular trade. One of the things I really wanted everyone to understand is that this impacted many many people in many different places. The shaded in areas represent the areas involved with the triangular trade.

FRIDAY: Today we watched a movie about slavery and imperialism/colonialism. While I understand that the slavery aspect is probably review for you all at this point, the colonialism in Africa is the new stuff, something we will get to discuss next week.

THERE IS A TEST WEDNESDAY ON AFRICA!! GET READY!!

ASSIGNMENT #5: Answer TWO (2) of the following questions:

1) Why do you think slavery persisted (kept on going) with time? I mean, wouldn't you think that Africans would learn to band together to stop slave traders? Why wouldn't they do that?

2) Knowing that the prospect of slavery could happen because of a lack of unity, would you rather live in a community that is self-sufficient, like the African villages we discussed earlier this week? OR would you rather live directly under the rule of a strict ruler, like Mansa Musa? Why?

3) What do you think gave Europeans the right to come into Africa and start enslaving people? How do you think they justified what they were doing? (This is something we will get a chance to discuss next week)

4) What are you being for Halloween? If you do not acknowledge or celebrate Halloween, how will you be spending that Friday night? And, if you don't mind answering (DO NOT FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE TO...there are three other questions to answer), is your decision to not celebrate a religious one?

You know it's true what the woman is saying in the article. What should it matter if he was a Muslim? And why do we only seem to hear about Christians leading our country? It's like if your not white and your not a christian then your not capable of leading a country...It's a sad world we live in...

This is a good article and it is true what she is saying. Its not a good thing about how you think someone that is whites and christians but it some times happends. You should not be based on what you are or who you are. But thats what it seems like if your not like that then people dont run the country.

1)slavery kept on going because its soon became an issue of superiorty after some time. nd the colored people tried to act out but clans nd people like the KKK tortured or killed them.

2)i totaly spaced out through almost all the lessons this week, but i would proably want to live under a strict ruler because the ruer would have tighter laws nd proably put a death penality on slavers (slave traders). but then again we all show we can wriggle our ways around laws nd do wht is banned, so whts the point of trying to ban some thing when we can still get aroubd them? self-sufficent or a strict ruler, won't stop every thing or any thing at all.

1.They didn't stop them because the Eurpeans had stronger weapons.
2.Under a ruler you would be safer but i would rather be independent.

4) i don't know what i am going to be yet.

2) i would rather live under a strict leader like mansa musa

2) i would rather live in a community that is self-sufficient because we would not have to fallow any of the kings orders and i would hate to do that.
3) for halloween i will be a firefighter. i can be that because my dad is a firefighter so i can ask him to use his gear.

1. i think that slavery kept going because the white people found out ways to keep the slaves from baning togther. they had many was of not letting them do anything like they couldent fight in war because white people didnt want them to have guns they thought the slaves would turn on their owners. slaves were also threated by clans that were agenst them so if theu left they would die anyway.

4. for halloween i dont exactly know what i am going to be yet but me and a bunch of friends are going to dress up like people fom batman so it will be cool.

1. i believe slavery kept on goin with time because it helped out the countries which bought slaves, tremendously and made the countries super rich. also africans wouldnt ban together b.c it was also helpin them in away of supplies also most feared tht if they went against the strong( europeans) then they would b killed or just b sent off to slavery aswell.

3. no one gave the europeans the rite to enslave the africans they gave themselves tht rite and they justified it by just being alot stronger than the africans so they could of basicly done w.e they wanted

1.
I think slavery went on becuase no one knew any better. I think Africans did not know that they were better than that and they werent just on earth to be slaves and work for people.
I also think that they didnt stop slave traders because they probably werent brave enough and they probably couldnt figure out a way to ban together to do it. A few slaves might be up for it but most are too fearful.
4. Speaking of halloween costumes...Im going shopping for one today hopefully! Me and my BESTEST FRIENDD are probably going to be a ladybug and a bumble bee. I'm not sure yet though. I might possibly be a french maid but I dont know. On Friday night, my BESTEST FRIENDD is coming over and we'll probably get ready and then go out trick or treating in town and we might walk around with people till really late and then she's just gonna sleep over(:

2. ohh man,it really depends. I mean there could be lack of unity no matter what the size of the village/town/country/empire/kingdom because IMO there is always a place (sadly) for chaos and with chaos comes lack of unity. I guess I rather live under someone like Mansa Musa.

4. Nahh I'm not going to actually 'celebrate halloween' hahahaha I'm just going to dress up for it because I like to play dress up! (i'm such a little kid,eh?)Umm,I actually have bought a few costumes because I'm not sure which one I want to be yet. I'm debating between being a Cop, Nurse,or a Bunny (not an easter bunny, more like a Hugh Hefner type bunny).Hahahaha, I don't think I'm going to be a Cop,I'd come off as being meannn. So really I'm debating between a nurse and bunny. But Halloween night, I'm not going trick or treating or something.I don't believe in that ,haha. That night, I'll be spending with my bf at my house and we'll be handing out tracks,Bible scriptures, and candy. And yes,I don't really 'celebrate' Halloween because of religious reasons.

3. It deffinentlly was not right for the europeans to enslave slaves. All they care about was money, they did'nt care about how the africans felt, or if they had familes. Meanwhile if someone care, and just took the europeans and enslave them they would not be happy. I don't know what gave them the right to think that that they could that. I think the europeans did'nt think anything of enslaving them. They probably thought 'oh it's no big deal,or so what if we take them it's a lot more. Some ignorante thoughts like that. 1. I don't why slavery kept going on, maybe because europeans wanted money and the only way was take africans make them work for them. I would hope that the arficans would learn to band together to stop slave traders but they were scared or no one really knew how

1) The reason they didn't learn is because the next generations just presumed that was life?
4) I can't go trick-or-treating because I have a football game that day at Ontrora High. what a bummer :(
Posted by  NicholasFFDR3  on 2008-10-18 20:59:18

3. I think that Europeans had no right to enslave Africans. The way in which those people where treated was compleetly uncivilized. They where human beings not property and I don't get what possessed them to think that.

4. I am probably being a pirate for Halloween. My aunt gave me a costume when I offered to help her with my little cousins, pirate themed birthday party so I guess I will just use that.

2) I think I would rather live under a strict rulers rules, like Mansa Musa. I wouldnt want to have slavery, and I think if there was a ruler they wouldnt let it happen! But i reallly wouldnt want to live either way and i feel sorry for everyone who used to live like that back then!
4) I dont really know what im being for halloween. And i can celebrate im christian! I was going to be a mime with my friend but now im not going trick or treating with her so idk yet!!

1.it was just the way of life and how things were kept during the time, htey thought every person should have a slave to work for them.

3. i dont think the Europeans had the right to come and take slaves i think its just what they thought they had to do. they thought they were the most supirior species of them all
Posted by  Robertgfdr8  on 2008-10-20 18:48:45

1.) i think slavery kept going on because it was great money for african kings, when the slave trade stoped Africa had no good way of making money any longer.

4.) im being spartacus because i like togas :I the reasion i celebrate halloween isnt for religion but for fun.
Posted by  dylangfdr8  on 2008-10-20 19:38:58

1. i think slavery went on for all that time because it became a way of life for most people, and slaves knew that the slave owners are more powerful.

4. for halloween me and my friends are being vampires :) and i celebrate halloween for fun, not religious reasons.

Assingment #5

1) Why do you think slavery persisted (kept on going) with time? I mean, wouldn't you think that Africans would learn to band together to stop slave traders? Why wouldn't they do that?
-I think that slaery persisted because some of the africans sold out other to slave owners to save themselves.

4) What are you being for Halloween? If you do not acknowledge or celebrate Halloween, how will you be spending that Friday night? And, if you don't mind answering (DO NOT FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE TO...there are three other questions to answer), is your decision to not celebrate a religious one?
p-I do not celebrate halloween because my family is christian and halloween is said to be the devil's holiday. Also, I have a football game that same afternoon in Onteora which is probalbly somewhere far away and ill be pooped when i get back.

I think it kept on going because, the slave owners, tried to take away the slaves' identities and didnt treat them with human rights, so maybe over time the slaves grew weak and really did start believing that they were different and didnt have the strength or hope to fight back, they were too torn inside, their spirits too destroyed. I don't know, its just something i've been thinking about for a while now. It's probably just a stupid thought.

4)What are you being for Halloween? If you do not acknowledge or celebrate Halloween, how will you be spending that Friday night? And, if you don't mind answering (DO NOT FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE TO...there are three other questions to answer), is your decision to not celebrate a religious one?

I CAN'T WAIT FOR HALLOWEEN!!!!! I'm gonna be a fairy! AWESOMENESS!!!!

3)I honestly think slavery is a very bad thing , and should've never started but sience the europeans did that to africans , it gave them much power and their economy grew. I think nothing gave them the right to enslave these people , but what did enslave the africans was the europeans power and technology.

4)For halloween I am going to be myself.I will be going around the town of HydePark with my friends in the develpments and houses near by .
Posted by  joeypfdr2  on 2008-10-21 18:57:14

3. i think the europeans gave the right themselves because they wanted other people to do their dirty work that they could do themselves but they decided to make other people do it and TRADE PEOPLE FOR GOODS! if i got traded for a cow i would probably FLIP!

4. for halloween i am going to uhh be idk but im going to my friends house and we arent really like doing anything but like fooling around his neighborhood and stuff hahaha
