| Music advice needed. |
You know that feeling when you are trying to get a project done, but you can think of anything? Like writers block, or artists block or whatever? I have had that feeling for almost 4 years now. I cant write music anymore.
Let me put this a different way.
I cant write music that i WANT to write. It seems like the only 'good' music i have been able to write are COUNTRY songs. Everyone loves my country music for some reason. I have even had a couple labels send me some messages online about them.
That would be great if I wanted to be a country musician. But I dont. I grew up in a very musical family. My mother and her sisters were in a family band that traveled all over the country, playing bluegrass and country music in places such as branson, missouri and the like. My dad has sung songs since I can remember and almost every guy on his side of the family plays the guitar at least moderately well.
Its all country though.
Country has been so deeply engrained in me that I cant seem to write anything else anymore. Maybe its an effect of growing up.
When I was in my mid teens, I was in a band that was really popular around town. We always had a big crowd at our shows and we even won a multi stage talent competition put on by one of the popular clubs in town at the time.
I dont mean to brag, but I just want you to know where the frustration comes from.
It seems like everyone thinks I am talented but me and it is bothering me more and more.
I cant write the kind of music I want to write. I have even taken online writing classes, gotten song writing tips from people in the industry and went so far as to stop listening to music all together for a month to try to reset my influences.
None of it seems to work for me though.
All my music comes out sounding like country. And the worst part is, its not that bad.
I even have a music video that a few friends of mine put together for one of my songs.
I think my problem may be my lyric writing. I cant seem to write very good lyrics, because I can never think of any that would 'sound good' to me. So, I end up writing about things that I know....and they are all country kinda song stuff.
I dont know how to break this cycle.
Should I even TRY to break it? Should I just play the hand I am dealt? Maybe I was given a talent for country for a reason. Even if I dont like it.
Like Johnny 5, i 'need input'
Thanks,
~MU
