 Overcoming Depression: My Experience.
     Technorati Profile
So how do you go about Overcoming Depression?  And is there a way of Overcoming Depression Naturally?

I believe there is.  I am not a medical professional, I can only speak from my own experience, but I believe there are many types of depression that can be overcome if one is willing to work hard enough at it, and never give in.
These blog posts are based on my own personal experience, and are not intended to diagnose, treat, or be considered as medical advice.  This is just you and me, talking about what I experienced.

I believe one of the first things a person has to do to overcome depression, is to admit that what you are feeling is not a 'normal' state of mind, and that you are worth more than you are getting out of life.  Some people talk about how depression is an illness, and certain types really are, but in general I believe that the more common types of
depression are merely harmful thought patterns.

There are things such as perspective, attitude, core beliefs, and such that can pretty much determine our reality.  For instance, if we believe that "Life Sux!" pretty much anything that happens is robbed of it's joy and value.  The beliefs we hold program us for either joy or
depression.

So the first thing we have to do is evaluate what we believe.
To give you some examples of positive belief, I will share with you a couple I repeated over and over to myself, until they became a part of my thinking, and were a BIG part of my recovery.
  • "Every experience in this life is a blessing, even the ones I don't enjoy, for they have given me the wisdom I have today!"
  • "I am a child of the living God, Creator of the Universe and all reality, What could I POSSIBLY Have to fear?"  "What could harm me?"
  • "I choose to do good and be happy, because it is my nature, and the true nature of any sentient creature."
These affirmations repeated over, and over, became a part of my belief eventually.  And why not?  All the negative beliefs I had, were mine because I had repeated the wrong things over, and over......

I remember the day I broke up with a girlfriend I cared very deeply for.  In terrible emotional pain I screamed out at the top of my lungs: "I WILL NEVER HURT THIS BAD AGAIN!!"  Fortunately there was no one around to hear me, I was alone in the house, but it didn't matter.  I had created a belief.  I believed with all my heart that I just couldn't take it again.
That decision was monumental in terms of overcoming depression.

So to re-cap, your first step has to be:
  • Change Your Beliefs
  • Make a descision that you will not accept more pain!
  • repeat these things over and over until they become a part of you.
  • Stick with it, you didn't aquire your depression overnight.

REMEMBER:  If you want to be free, you can be!

I beleive in the positive energy, repeating positive thoughts. But I think depression steaks up on you and then when it rears its ugly head you are too weak for the positive words. I think that alot of what people think depression is, is really just a bad outlook on life, which comes the negative thoughts.

You are right balderdash, I plan to adress this problem in the next post. I encountered this weakness, and it took me some time to find a way around it. It was amazingly simple when I did!

There are nasty games played by some people in creating depression in another person. Relationship is a key factor so it isn't done by people you don't know. What they do is to cause you to make an association between some activity though which you feel joy with something bad or frightening. So when you try to do whatever it is to feel joy you come up against an unconscious association with something unpleasant. So yes it is about beliefs that you have formed as a result of real but nasty experience. It stops you from feeling your joy. Once you know that you can overcome anything that others might underhandedly try to set up. The spell is broken. You can do what you enjoy and when the bad feeling comes up you can laugh at it and it soon looses its power and vanishes. These sort of games are played by controlling manipulative people who get a kick out of someone else's suffering.

Yes, annavictoria, so much of what you speak of I have experienced myself, and it is those unconcious associations that can control us utterly until we uncover them and debunk them. A true Zen Master will teach you that it is not necessary to DO anything about your problems, but to just SEE. Once you have seen them for what they really are, they cease to be problems.

Wonderful and Wise mantras.

I believe our Mantras define us, we can choose the good, or the bad. As a friend of mine once said: "Garbage in = Garbage out!" that is true both for computer progamming and thinking!
