Chapter One
A NORMAL DAY?
You wake up each morning and think to yourself this is going to be a typical day. Right? It wasn’t for me. It was July 22, 2002 I was awakened by a tapping sound on my window. It was my best friend Elmer. He wanted me to get up and go fishing. I got up dressed and we were on our way. We stayed out for several hours but, didn’t catch anything worth keeping so, we decided to go home with nothing to show for our time at the lake.
When we arrived back home we engaged in pleasant conversation and were debating whether or not to see the new X-Men movie. We had decided to see the movie when my mother came to the door to inform me that one of my horses was walking strangely. Needless to say, I became concerned and left in quite a hurry to check and make sure my horses were ok. I ran down the stairs; started across the lawn when I slipped on something. I felt my left knee go out of joint and I landed on the ground with a thud ; curled up in the fetal position, in pain. I struggled to get to me feet but could not get up. I felt a pair of strong arms helping me to my feet, then to the chair. It was Elmer that had come to my aid. I sat there and tried to compose myself before trying to stand again. Elmer had gone into the house and my son went to get my mother. I was alone and worried about my horses. I spied a piece of PVC pipe grabbed it and held it in front of me. I used it like a walking stick to help me get to my mother’s house and check on the horses.
After pulling myself up the hill I finally arrived and called the horses to my relief, they were all doing well. They were ok! However, I was not! I realized I was injured and needed to get medical help. My knee was swollen and throbbing badly. It was getting increasing more difficult to walk. It was such a helpless feeling. I was extremely glad when I saw my son and mother coming to my aid.
Upon entering the house, my mother being a Registered Nurse evaluated my condition and deemed it necessary for me to go to the Emergency Room. My father didn’t think I should drive, so, he insisted on taking me.
We arrived at the emergency room late in the afternoon and after checking in at the desk, we settled in the waiting area. Several hours passes before I was called to triage. While I was having my vitals taken an elderly man was wheeled in and left at the desk. The desk clerk looked at him and asked “what are you doing here?” The man replied “I was brought here because I have no where else to go. I thought to myself, is this what is ultimately in-store for me? After my vitals were taken, I was sent back to the waiting room. I waited several more hours before being taken to a room and informed that the doctor would be in to see me in a few minutes. Minutes turned into hours and finally the doctor arrived.
After the doctor had examined me, she ordered x-rays and a knee immobilizer. Minutes passed when a male nurse brought in the immobilizer. When he was putting it on my leg I asked if x-rays were going to be taken? He said he didn’t know, continued with his work and left the room. More time passed. The doctor entered the room again, noticed the immobilizer on my leg, and asked if x-rays had been taken, I answered in the negative . She became upset, told me she would rectify the situation, and would be right back. Several minutes passed, the door opened and I was taken to the x-ray department. I arrived in x-ray and was asked to take my pants off, so my leg could be x-rayed. I complied and was given a sheet to cover myself up. After the x-rays were taken, read and interpreted by the doctor, I was informed that nothing was wrong with my leg. However, the doctor wanted me to wear the immobilizer for a week and follow up with an orthopedic surgeon.
