If a child is very good at something why do people
It really bugs me when SOME people think i push my daughter (usually online people, as real life people know what i am like)

This post that was on a parenting site (not aimed at me personally)

I think some of this talk of reception age kids on stages 7,8,9+ is just ridiculous. My son is in Yr 1 now and is the strongest reader in his class, he has brought home a new book almost every night since he started school and is on Stage 6 Orange.

Every school does it differently, at DS's school each stage consists of 40-50 books and it takes ages to get from one stage to another. There are often books that come home and I cant even find them on the ORT link someone posted - tonight we're reading 'The Dump' by Roderick Hunt and although its an ORT book, I cant find it anywhere??!

For a reception aged child to be on level 7 or 8 they would need to be bringing home several books a night, or skipping a lot out.

Im looking at DS's book and there are 25ish words to a page, with words like "pieces" "council" "dangerous" "signpost" "language" "university" and "villagers" and if youre telling me a 4 year old whose been at school a few months can read these with ease, then there are either some parents of child prodigies on this forum or very pushy parents. Or perhaps a misunderstanding of the stages. I dont believe for one minute that 4 and 5 year olds are reading these words and understanding them.

Let children be children and stop pushing them and comparing and using your child as a trophy to make yourselves look like perfect parents and making yourselves feel like you've got something tangible to show you're doing it right, making the parents of less able children feel inadequate in the process. This discussion topic may be thinly veiled as an interest in your childs education, but in my opinion its just an opportunity for pushy parents to come and "show off" their kids fantasticness (made up word yes I know), and by proxy, looking like supermum.

This REALLY bugs me, my daughter (4 yrs and 9 months) is exceptionally great at reading, she has been reading since she was 3 yrs 1 month.

My daughter just started reading, the only thing i have done is read her a story every night of her life from the age of 18 months...thats IT!

She has picked it up, she is self taught, she is on level 6 reading (purple sticker, which she is finding easy, not really challenging her)

But i have never pushed her at all! It isn't MY "fault" she is very very good at reading?

I just asked her if she can read these words that are in that post ("pieces" "council" "dangerous" "signpost" "language" "university" and "villagers") and she read them fine. The thing is she actually understands what she is reading as well.

This is the child that came up to me one day and told me to stop being so sarcastic! (at aged 2!) and it was in context!

My daughter is average in other things, her writing is coming on well, and her spelling is good for her age.

It just really annoys me as i feel bad if i ever boast to someone about her reading, my mum asked someone she knows who is a teacher what kind of age level 6 is (out of interest) and the woman turned round and said my mum was biased and that she can;t be that good aged 4! How rude!

Why should i have to stop boasting? she is my only child and i am so proud of her!

The only thing i have done is praise and encourage her, am i wrong??

Peace out! xxx
