| Genetically altered babies, my project. |
First of all, Thank you to all of you who sent me "get well soon" wishes and suggestions regaurding my last blog. :]
Anyway, the following is what I had researched for my genetics class. I did this all in one day after being sick from food poisoning. I'm pretty damn proud of myself so I thought i'd post it here. I was limited in words and sentences because we were told to have maximum 8 lines in large text per slide. Yes, this was on powerpoint.
"Genetically altered babies.
Would you like to have the perfect baby ? If so, advances in technology imply that in the near future, we can do just that. Or do you just see that as morally wrong ? Will it make advances in health and technology possible, or will it mean a major flaw ?
This is something that can be possible by alternating a babies genetic makeup to make sure of the lack or presence of particular genes.
In vitro fertilization is an important factor in all of this because it is the method used to make “test tube babies”.
In vitro fertilization, IFV, is a procedure in which egg cells are fertilized by sperm outside of the womb. The embryos are then relocated to the uterus.
This is a process used for infertile women who want to have a baby and if we can make infertile women have offspring, then why can’t we make genetic alterations to that baby ? As of now, it looks like we can in our near future.
Debating on whether such is morally wrong isn’t something that should necessarily be brought up in schools. Though, debating so or observing the views of others can determine or potentially predict the outcome.
Many have argued that doing such is morally wrong, but have done nothing to stop the development. Observing this tells us that the process will continue and we will let it continue.
There are such societies in which the male is valued so much more than the female. These societies mostly include China and India. This is a flaw because if this development is to continue, the population will then become unbalanced.
Another flaw includes gender – role stereotypes. The “firstborn population” would be skewed to a point of being doubly dominant. This would make gender – role stereotypes more apparent than before."
I have not finished the "advancements" slide, so it is missing something.
I did write this in my own words, I did not copy & paste and I rarely paraphrased for lack of a better way to say it.
I'm not one to make snap judgements based on ONE speech, article, picture, ect. so I had about SIX pages open all at one just to cross reference. So, I feel I did very accurate work.
Now, what are YOUR opinions on this ?
But PLEASE don't be stupid and just say, "It's wrong because God never intended for such !!" Now, I don't think you're stupid for believing in a "God" or a higher power. I think it's stupid to shout the above or anything close to it without taking careful consideration of why you think the subject is wrong. But here are my reasons why you should not say such.
1. I do not believe in any higher power. Do not waste my time with that. I'm asking for reasons. If you have to use "God" in your explination, do so lightly and once or twice.
2. If I were to assume a "God" is in of existance, I would assume that our free will, given to us by such a being, means this higher power intended so. Free will is free will. Anything can happen given so.
Goodbye.
