I banged my foot on Thursday night. I had gone out for a couple of drinks after work with my friend Shanna, as we do almost every Thursday night. Although I only had two drinks, I was definitely buzzed which tends to happen when I drink on an empty stomach. When I got home, I had to put away the three loads of laundry I had done before work that morning. (I always do my laundry before work to avoid the crowds, but never put it away until I get home to avoid getting to work any later than necessary.) I also had to pack for the weekend as I was going to my Mom’s straight from work on Friday night. One of my college housemates was throwing a housewarming/BBQ party on Saturday and, since she and her husband moved to the same town as my mom, I figured it made sense to visit my mom the same weekend. Anyway, I live in 500 square feet which, believe it or not, is kind of large for a studio apartment in Manhattan. Apparently, not large enough for a buzzed girl, a suitcase and three loads of laundry, however, because while trying to multi-task, I tripped over the clothes strewn all over the floor and banged my pinky toe against the edge of the suitcase. I let out a yell and swear I saw stars but, in my buzzed state, quickly moved on and continued to pack/put away my laundry. Only a few moments later, I tripped again on my clothes and again banged my foot against the edge of the suitcase. It hurt like a mother fucker and, although I cried, I assumed the pain would subside and I would be as good as new shortly.
The next morning I woke up, limped to the bathroom, fooled myself into thinking I could actually go to the gym, tried to put on my sneakers, let out a howl in response to the pain and went back to sleep for an hour. When I woke up for good, I realized that it would take me an hour to walk to work and each step would be agony so I took a cab. I live 10 blocks away from my office and, under normal circumstances, would never consider taking a cab (or even the subway) but every step was misery and I had no choice. When I got to work, I milked all of the sympathy from my colleagues for a little while until I noticed that my foot was actually green. The whole day was a nightmare, except that I was treated to lunch by two male vendors who had demonstrated a new trademark searching tool earlier that morning. Although both men were married, I engaged in harmless flirtation with both of them over the demonstration and during lunch. I must confess that I thoroughly enjoy being the lone woman in the company of men.
I left work early to try to beat the rush hour crowd and caught another cab to Port Authority Bus Terminal from where I took an hour bus ride to my mom’s town. From there, I went out to dinner with my Mom and some of her lady friends (the “Golden Girls”). It was actually fun and I deduced that her friends are just like mine, only they drink and curse less. They all told me I was beautiful and chastised my mom for reading my blog a few months ago behind my back; my kind of ladies.
I had a nice time at my friend’s party the next day except that I couldn’t walk. To make matters worse, I kept giving up my chair to my friends so they could sit with their kids. Standing too long put pressure on my foot and caused me intense pain which I tried to minimize by drinking some Coronas. I also had to rehash the Brian story when some of the girls asked me if I was still dating “that cute guy” who had taken me to the beach. (The last time I saw these girls, I was still dating him and had brought pictures from the week in the OBX.) I had told them we stopped dating months ago but, apparently, they all forgot or perhaps they hadn’t listened since my single girl stories never measure up to their baby stories. Anyway, I had to tell them again that it did not work out. My friend’s brother also asked me where my “buddy” was. I immediately wondered if he chose the word “buddy” because he was uncertain whether my significant other would be male or female! I am the only one of his sister’s friends who is not either married or seriously involved with someone and since my past relationships have never gotten serious enough to reach Peter’s radar, perhaps he thought I might be gay. I quickly told him I was in between boyfriends, although I probably shouldn’t have cared too much whether or not he thought I was a lesbian. In fact, I’d probably be more interesting to all of the married folks at the party if I was a lesbian.
Colt 45 called me last night to confirm plans for today. He had suggested going to the All Star Fest. I told him about my foot and we decided to touch base this morning to decide if I was up for it. Although my foot was a little better, I was still limping when I woke up this morning and knew that walking around a crowded convention center would be painful as well as delay the healing process. I thought about suggesting the park, but would not be able to do anything but sit in the sun and figured Colt 45 would want to at least toss around a Frisbee or do something active. I could have suggested that we do something low-key rather than postpone but I did not want him to miss out on one of the only nice days we’ve had this summer because of my foot. So we decided to simply reschedule. I spent the afternoon at the pool on my roof; soaking up sun, writing a bit of my novel and resting my foot. Although walking is truly painful and I do believe that staying off of my foot was the wise choice, I wonder if I would have tried harder to keep the date if I was really, really into Colt 45. I do, however, genuinely want to give it one more shot since I truly enjoy his company so I tried to make it clear that I hoped to reschedule. He said he would like to see me again too, so hopefully, my foot will heal by the end of the week and we can make plans. If not, I guess I will have to suck it up and go to the doctor. In the meantime, I have another one of those singles dinners this week; trying not to put my eggs in one basket. I also start my novel writing class tomorrow night. I am totally psyched but have “the night before the first day of school jitters”. I aspire to write a chick-lit book as opposed to the “Great American Novel” and I am particularly concerned that the others will not take my writing seriously. I know I shouldn’t care, but I do!
Finally, remember the guy I reconnected with on Facebook? The one who went to camp with me many, many years ago? Well, we spoke on the phone for over two hours on Wednesday and hope to make plans soon. I think getting back in touch with him was the highlight of my entire week and if all I get out of Facebook is a resumed friendship with him, it will be worth it. |

Aww Meri, your poor foot! You should maybe go get it x-rayed, although, there's really nothing they can do for broken feet parts.
That's cool about Facebook guy, though. I love a good blast from the past!
I wish you speedy healage!!

Your foot sounds horrible. I think you should go to the doctor just in case. I hope you get better soon.
Congrats on reconnecting with an old friend and on your rescheduled date with Colt 45.

Yeah, I'm with angelwings and prelude here, you should go to the Doctor :/ if that's that painful... Best to get it checked.. I'm sorry you're in pain :(
At least the party went ok :) even though you had to resort to downing some Coronas to numb it a little :P Yuck, I hate Coronas.. Heineken/VB all the way! :D
:O I'm so glad you're re-connecting with your old friend! The whole Facebook thing was looking fairly grim for awhile, there, I was worried :P but yeah, congrats!!
Take care, sis ;D

Ouch!
I have broken my toe many times.
Best thing to do is tape it to the next one. Same thing a Dr would do, and tape costs less than an office visit and x-rays.
In about a week it wont hurt much at all.
Hugs! Hope it feels better soon!

Gotta love drunken wounds! I ALWAYS hurt myself when I have been drinking. I'm just a natural klutz though.
I understand loving the fact that you are the only female in a group of males. I wish I worked with all men...women can be so incredibly catty!!
I think you should have just messed with Peter and led him to believe you were a lesbian or have created a crazy story yourself. It is so much fun to mess with people like him! ha
BTW...can't wait to hear about your meeting with facebook guy when that happens. That 2 hour phone conversation has me very intrigued....

Awww, sorry about the foot. Is it feeling any better yet? I hope so!
Did you see the Home Run Derby last night?! Holy Hell! I cannot believe that one guy got 28 HRs in Round One & then lost it! Sucks to be him! Ha!
I'm so excited to see my Brewers in the game tonight - Ben Sheets is the starting pitcher! Awhoo hoo! :)

Ouch, it's amazing how the smallest toe can be the biggest hindrance if injured.
Good Luck with your next meet up with Colt 45. Although I sense you are more excited about meeting the old friend from facebook.
