 Playing it Straight...
Yup, I'm watching reality TV again. (Cut me some slack, I NEVER watch TV at school, except when Emily has it on and I'm trying to study, so over break I'm indulging.) This time the show is called "Playing it Straight", and there are a bunch of guys stuck on a ranch with one midwestern girl, all trying to convince her they're straight. Buuuuut half of them are gay. if she picks a straight man, they each win half a million dollars, but if she falls for a gay guy, he gets the whole million and she gets nothing. It's pretty funny to listen to them try to out each other-one guy actually accused another of being gay based on the fact that he 'says a lot of s's when he speaks' and 'has blonde highlights'. Whaaaat?! Who makes that kind of judgement based on stupid things like that? Haha. And there's an interesting clip they keep playing where two of the guys are arm-wrestling and one breaks the other's arm. Nuts!
But anway... the girl talked about how she went into this thinking that it'd be really easy-'watch who crossed their legs and who was drinking their decaf frappuchinos'... and coupled with the goofy stereotypes the guys threw out there... it amazes me how much the gay stereotype has pervaded society. It's obviously not true that gay men all cross their legs or something ridiculous like that, and I think this show is taking a nice, on-the-sly stab at breaking throught those stereotypes and increasing society's acceptance of homosexuals. The fact that peoples' hearts are being broken and a million dollars is on the line doesn't hurt, either, for the rest of us who don't pick up on the possible social ramifications of the show.

P.S. -I had to laugh-My dad and I were talking a little bit about the stereotypes and such before he went downstairs for the night, and when he headed down he asked me what channel the show was on so he could watch a little more before he went to bed. Haha. (My dad does not watch reality tv, he's in the military and more of a MASH and Discovery Channel kinda guy.) It made me giggle.
