 I am From
-this was for a class assignment, based on the poem "I am From" by Mary Pipher

I am from Steven and Stacey, Stacey and Rick, Janice and Raymond.
From the Derby, Wessling, and Mohr- rocky Ireland and Norwegian lands.
I am from “I am the parent and you are the child” and withering stares over the tops of glasses.
I am from make-believe wrestling matches and crack-the-egg trampoline contests.
From homemade forts, mulberry bushes, and winding railroad tracks.
I am from the boxcar children and the babysitter’s club, from Sesame street, Power Rangers, and Nickelodian.
I am from fiery, spicy summers and raw, polar winters.
From flat, rolling plains and green corn fields-‘knee high by the fourth of July’.
I am from firefly nights and lakeside days, bon fires and smoke bombs, bass fishing and toad catching.
I am from catechism classes and wooden pews.
From soccer fields and concession-stand dinners.
I am from the Wildcats, Spartans, and Raiders.
From stockyard smells in the city and the Missouri River.
I am from the Jungle Book and the Olsen twins, from rollerblades and ice skates.
From backyard camping and front yard fighting-from dysfunction and perfect imperfection.
I am from the orange and black, and the glitter lips and red stilettos.
I am from “power”, “respect”, and “tradition”.
From “OH Honestly!”, “Unacceptable!”, and “Seriously!”
I am from movie nights, Wings Wednesday, and couch sledding.
From “the midget did it” and “happy birthday Mackie”, from black paint and brown risers.
I am from show choir moms and stage dads, from soccer tournaments and rival high schools.
From Respect against Pride, from jeans and a t-shirt against the khaki’s and polo.
I am from the Explorers, Bandits, and Musketeers, from Lewis and Clark and plastic painted prairie dogs.
I am from friends and family, one in the same. From “These are My People”, “My Town”, and “Our Song”.
From puppy love and best friends forever, flowers and fights, diamonds and Coffee Works.
From the performance of a lifetime and the final bow. A bridge-builder, star performer, Headliner.
The Naughty Midgets, the team in black in the back.
My lyrics, my song, be it country or show tune.
