Had I just walked into a movie? An X-men movie maybe? One where someone had the power to freeze time, or the power to make people disappear, or both!
It really did not matter what I had walked into, the sensation was that of a small child walking into Hamlet's toy shop for the very first time - though the umpteenth time for me was still as memorable. It's that immense feeling of being a very special person, because for that one moment you were sure that all this had been put here just for you.
It was approximately 01.30 as I walked into the departure hall of Dusseldorf Flughaven. The huge airport is in complete silence and darkness. For a split second I am completely alone, and then I spot a few people scattered asleep on the benches.
The departure hall is a vast space. The roof towers high above me, and the interior resembles something out of the space age. I could well be boarding a rocket to the moon in a few hours. But I'm not.
The only thing that is moving is little me, or more accurately a gigantic backpack with arms, legs, and a red ponytail. All I want to do is walk around and around, and look and see, and listen to the silence of the airport sleeping. I want to breathe in every cubic centimeter of airport air.
I've been traveling for 6 hours now, just 26 more to go. I have arrived at the first milestone of this trip. I will take a moment to show it the respect it deserves.
My flight will not be leaving for another 6,5 hours so I should find a place to camp out.
Before I close my eyes I take one more look around the airport, the airport that has been created just for me. I feel ever so grateful for these moments. In three hours time I will wake up to the hustle and bustle of usual airport life. The airport will no longer belong to me but to the thousands of stories of arrival and departure that inhibit the airport during flying hours. And I will drink latte and read those stories as they stride past me, and I will wait patiently for my flight.
How I love airports!
