story part 8 (due to typo)
Okay, two things:
1) this is really part 8, due to a typo where I put part 4 twice (whoops *smacks head on desk*)
2) Thank you, SubTomato, for the best freaking comment I've ever had! I'm glad I could paint a picture of Kaya so well to you XD !

The hours slipped by slowly, torturing them both. The silence and awkwardness was killing them both. Vlad wanted to say something, but was afraid that he would be seen as stupid. Kaya wanted to be laughing, to talk with him. He was her friend, the only one she had ever really had, and she didn't want to ruin their friendship.

Soon, dusk was upon them. Kaya decided that they had to talk sometime. "What's the outside world like?" she asked.

Vlad was taken aback by the sudden question. "Wh-what?" he stuttered.

"You know," she said. "Outside of the forest. What's it like?"

Vlad shook his head. "You are lucky to have grown in a world so peaceful. I look around us now and see plants and animals, completely unaware. Outside is a horrible place. War is upon us. The orcs and the dark elves have joined forces, destroying village after village. But that is not enough for them. They want more. To make all races their slaves."

"But..." Kaya interupted. "Why don't you want the same thing? You're a dark elf too... Why defy your people?"

"Because they believe that violence is the answer to our banishment," said Vlad. "I believe that we can be accepted, and still live peacefully." He looked at Kaya. The slight breeze played with her hair, blowing it wildly. He could imagine himself brushing it out of the way, behind her ear. But that was just fancy of the imagination. It would never become a reality...

"But..." he continued. "I guess there are some things that are good about the world. There is still beauty masked behind the darkness." Vlad looked away. 'Like you...' He wanted to yell those two words, to shout it to the heavens. He wanted the world to know that he was in love, for his cry to be heard across the globe.

"Like the stars, and the sunset..." he finished.

Kaya looked away. The trees were growing thin, and she didn't like that. Her tension grew, but it was not fear that fueled it. Nervousness helped, as well. "I... I've never seen a sunset... The trees grow too high..."

The sun was resting on the tops of the trees now, and it began to grow dark. Vlad gently put his hand on her shoulder to stop her. His heart began to pound as his hand touched the fabrics of her clothing. "We should stop, it's getting late."

Kaya nodded. The trees were too thin to make a tent, so she contented herself with sitting beside Vlad. He smiled at her. "You won't be able to see the sunset tonight, but the stars will be seen clearly.

Kaya looked up at the darkening sky. A few pinpricks of light began to appear. "It is beautiful..." she whispered to herself.

Slowly but surely, the stars began to brighten against night's black cloak. They brightened the forest below, staving off darkness from completely surrounding them. "You... are the first friend I've really had... Even after you found out what I was," said Kaya. She put her head on his shoulder and leaned slightly against him. "Thanks."

Vlad's heart pounded faster and faster. He looked down at her and, putting his arm around her waist, smiled. "You're welcome."
