 One side of Ukrainian society
It seems to me, very few people here know something about Ukraine, my native country. And those who know consider it the country of the third world. And it is, comparatively to every developed state. There is a long way Ukraine has to pass to become a country where people at least abide by the law.

There are a lot of people who take bribes in my country. Almost everybody does. Though there is a huge number of people who feel indignant about this. But when it's time to give a bribe to some officials they are in the first line saying this is the easiest way to solve the problem.

During my study at the university I've never been persuaded to pay money for exams (luckily). I study well, so I've never had any problems getting grades. You know, I am even proud that I've never given anybody a bribe for my study. But it seems this examinations would be the exception...
We have one lecturer who has never been notable for a serious relation to his work. I mean he could miss lectures, he just didn't come! And if it was once, then there wouldn't be any problem. But he missed almost half lectures! Nobody knows why.
And now we have to pass some kind of test where we'll prove our knowledge of his discipline. All we've got to do is just to learn our summaries by heart and then retell. Nothing difficult. But when one students group came to the exam a week ago, he said "well, this grade costs this much, that grade costs that much. I'm waiting in another lecture room. Come in when you're ready."
And all students had to pay him money whether they knew something or not. There wasn't any choice.

You might wonder what was the discipline this lecturer teachs. It is law!
A teacher of law takes bribes. I think it could happen only in my country.

Ukrainians face this everywhere. Almost every officier, politician, every person who has at least some power takes grafts. If you have money you have everything. This is how it works here.
A sad truth for me.

Recently I've talked to one of my friends from Germany and he was actually surprised to hear about such a scale of bribery in Ukraine. But then he said he took pity on those people who support themselves with bribetaking. In his opinion, when a person makes money in illegal way he always feel guilty for this and that's why can't rest assured. If so, then why do they continue doing this? Usually they earn enough money to provide themselves and their families (if they have ones), much more than enough.
I think the main problem is non-punishability. Instead of watching over the observance of laws our authorities just line their own pockets. And who knows if it'll stop.

I'm sure you are not the only country where the "Law" person takes a bribe :)

I suppose you're right, but not everywhere there is such a considerable scale :)
Thanks for comment, E2S!!

That seems like a tough way to go through school... i am sad for you... but when you grow up in a place like that I guess you do not know anything different. It's good to see you know what is right and waht is wrong

Thanks, Douglas.
I also think people see what's right depending on their upbringing. We get used to what we see around and consider this is how it should be...

One of my favorite modern artists is from Ukraine. Taras Loboda I have one of his paintings. Thanks for the enlightenment about your homeland. I look forward to knowing you more and more. :)

gkc1968, thank you for comment. Ukraine has got a lot of talented people, but usually they don't have enough money to become known. I'm glad for my compatriot :)

This is the way of the world, it seems. In Puerto Rico, there are stories of bribe-taking and lining the pockets of those who can help others, but choose to take advantage for themselves. I am sorry to hear this, Julia. You study hard, it shows. It must be difficult to study hard, graduate and know that your fellow lawyers haven't worked as hard as you. Perhaps this is why the laws are still corrupt, it sounds like a vicious cycle of abuse. In Puerto Rico, the ones who uncover these illegal acts are punished in some way. I wish we had more people like you. Be strong and courageous. You will succeed by your own merits and will be happy that you can look in the mirror and know that you did it on your own. Good luck, Julia!

Ellie, thank you very much for stopping by and commenting.
I like to study, to get new knowledges, it's not very hard for me. And it's very disappointing for me to see what is going on in my country. I am ashamed of it.
You're right, I'd better be proud that I've done it myself, by my own.
Thank you for your kind words.

Thanks for sharing this. It is amazing how we know so little about the struggles of others. Your integrity is admirable and you should be very proud of yourself. It all means so much more when we get it ourselves and don't take the easy way out.

I couldn't believe what I read. How alwful for you. You should be very proud of yourself like Brian said. S

Brian, Sarah, thank you for your comments. It's a shame for me to give a bribe, especially when I could do something myself. I wish everybody in my country feels the same.

That's so sad. You know, I'm glad Ukraine has people like you too. And by the way,I'm from India and bribery isn't exactly a mystery here either.
But, that's disturbing, even school authorities resorting to this. They're supposed to teach what's right, for God's sake! :(

HardThinker, thanks for your words.
I also think the teachers' task is to teach what is right. I realise that I can't change the whole standarts of law in my country, but I try to put my own efforts into changing at least what I can - my life which I'd like to live without giving bribes.

Julia
I am Glad that you had the integrity to do it on your own, I can not imagine the frustration your country men have to go through to accomplish the things the so desire.
It sounds like a very politically corrupt society, where the rich will easily get by and the poor suffer greatly. Pity
It would be nice if the corruption was put to an end I am sure it will.

foolm8, thanks for stopping.
What surprises me most is that my compatriots seem to agree with present state and even think that giving a bribe is the easiest solution.
Yes, I agree it would be nice to put an end to a corruption, but I'm not sure if it happen while I am alive...

Hi LuckyJulia, I believe that bribes happen in most countries. We live in quite a corrupt world. It doesn't surprise me that it goes on in your country, but what is surprising is that it quite open and that you have seen it happen.
I believe that it will have been going on for many years all around the world and still continues to go on. The people who run our countries are not the ones in charge, it's those that are paying them to keep quiet, run our countries.
I think it's easier for us to deal with if we don't see it, but in your case it's obvioulsy very hard for you to miss it. It's unfair, but keep studying hard so you don't fall into the trap.
Take Care LuckyJulia

This is a problem in many countries. It is shameful that this is the way of the world and has been going on for so long. People are well aware of it, yet it seems to be beyond anyone's control to do anything about it. Things have to change from the grass root level for it to affect the people in power. Excellent post, LuckyJulia. Kudos to you for tackling this subject.

Nigeria is another country that lives by the bribe. Western corporations are loath to invest in Nigeria because of the wide-scale dishonesty, there; too much risk of having their property nationalized by a government that is just as dishonest as the people they govern, and too many employees robbing them at every turn. In the long run, bribes impoverish a nation.

well those things do happen in other countries too..

PS: nevertheless..another countries are not as beautiful as Ukraine!!

This was interesting. There is so much I do not know of other places so I really enjoy reading what the people who live there have to say. Even in the US we have bribes. Most of which are never exposed. I have been told it is very common in Mexico also.

Thank you for sharing. Best of luck in school. And Julia, lots of people cheat at school here. Sad, but true. Lawyers probably know better than most how to get away with it. LOL - not funny.
