Today I tried to cook thick pancakes from marrow squash... For the first time in my life :D
I've eaten them before, but today I decided to make them myself... So I found my recipe book and started the saint action... There was written 'take 1-2 small marrows, pile them and grate. Then add 1 egg, 1 tablespoon flour, salt and household soda slaked with vinegar. Mix and cook on a small fire'.
If it had been so easy...
First of all, I didn't have small marrows. I only had a big one. But I decided the size didn't matter and started to grate it... You know, the bigger the marrow, the bigger its seeds... So mine had huge ones! That's why I had to separate seeds from the other stuff...
Okay, after that being finished I did everything as the recipe said. I added 1 egg, 1 tablespoon flour, salt and soda... But the mess I got didn't even remotely resembled what I understand by paste... So I added one more egg and tablespoon flour... It didn't help...
Well, all confused I phoned my mother asking for advice. She told me that after grating the marrow I had to add salt and then wring out the mess. And only after that add everything else! Then my question is: Who wrote that recipe book??? Did they try to cook according to their recipes??? Or did they suppose I would guess that myself??? :D
Anyway, confused as I was I asked my mom if I could rescue my pancakes... She told me to add more flour... Enough to thicken the marrow juice... I followed her advice and after 6 (!) tablespoons flour my mess began to look like a real paste!! What a relief that was! :D
I fried my pancakes on a small fire as was said... They seemed fine... Though you know, when I tasted them it was like something was missing... I don't know what... But the taste was not the same one I used to. Who knows...
The only person apart from me who tasted my culinary 'work of art' is my father. He didn't express any emotions about my cooking and just said that he didn't like marrow and there's nothing tasty you can make from it... :D
So how my grandmother manages to cook marrow pancakes which are tasty and pretty great? ;)
