 Privilege

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rryBQ7CUCek

The video that the above links to is of Kozol speaking at a conference. He talks about white privilege a little bit and he does as well in Shame of a Nation. This reminds me of an article that I read in TE250 "White Privilege: The Invisible Knapsack". It's basically about all of the "inherent" privileges that whites have and others do not (and I mean inherent only in terms of the fact that society just GIVES these to whites, not that there is anything NATURAL about it). I know about these privileges, I have been made aware of them yet how do I reconcile this? How does this affect the classroom environment? Obviously just feeling guilty changes nothing, but what does? For me, I guess the only way I can think of to deal with this is to ensure that I am doing everything I can to give my students access to things and privileges that they may not get handed to them by society. I am not sure that I can think of specific ways to do this, do any of you have suggestions or ideas? Or in general, how can we reconcile the fact that as members of the 'dominant' group, we could be in a classroom full of members of the marginalized groups of society?
