I agree Sarah, I think there is real possibility in standardized tests. Unfortunately, as of this moment they are being used to punish schools. I think that we could learn a lot from not only the answers the students give but also the patterns that are apparent in standardized test scores. For example, there is a trend for African Americans to do worse than Caucasians on standardized tests. Is this a built in bias? Patterns such as these might help us to learn more about our teaching methods and our students. However, I don't know whether there can ever be a test that accurately measures all student's knowledge. As we have learned in our TE classes, there are different types of intelligences; students vary in the areas they excell at. Some are very creative, some do best with rigid guidelines. Some students just don't perform well on tests because of the way they are set up. I think that these students throw off results; they may not do well on tests but they can demonstrate the same knowledge in other ways. One last thing that disturbs me about standardized tests is that students do not have equal resources. Students at better funded schools are more likely to have newer books, technology, teachers who aren't burnt out, and other resources that students from poorer districts don't have. Obviously there are going to be some disparities between the rich and poor districs when it comes to testing. (posted in standardized testing)
