Along with innocence and dignity, manners and any sense of common decency seems to be a thing of the past. Gone. Extinct.
I was having a discussion with a coworker the other day on the topic, and the more we spoke on it the more it's truth became prevalent to me.
Rarely are the words "please" and "thankyou" heard from the mouths of people these days. So many seem to be living in a deluded bubble filled with egocentric narcissistic ideals that they feel these words are no longer needed and they have the right to merely demand their wants.
"I want help NOW!"
No, "Can you please help me?"
Table manners - gone. Seems that talking with one's mouth full and elbows on the table is all the rage these days. I don't know about people these days, but I was taught, and still believe, that to behave in such a way is incredibly rude. Also, when out in a restaurant, you wait for everyone to receive their meals before beginning to eat - I can't stand it when people start munching away and are almost done before you even get your plate.
Interrupting others when they are clearly busy or speaking to someone else. If it's urgent, how about an, "excuse me" or "sorry to bother you, but..." Oh, wait, I forgot that the world revolves around these people and they come first.
So many other instances...is it that people are merely not taught these things from their parents anymore, indicating a decline in quality in parenting and importance placed on values, or is it society imploring people to be egotistic superficial tools who don't know how to function politely?
I must say, it incredibly frustrates and pisses me off when people show a lack of manners and common decency, leading to an automatic elimination of any respect I would or could have held for that individual. Because, essentially, to me manners is the first step towards fostering respect from another, and if you can't do that, then why should I care about anything else you might have to say?
Bah, end of rant.
