Thoughts.com Blogs - Shanghai Old Town

Today I visited Shanghai's "Old Town" for some sightseeing and shopping. I bartered for gifts for my friends and family (and myself), visited a Buddhist temple, and saw some breathtaking views. I also had a man spit on my toe and another one step on my toe HARD so it hurt for a good hour. I used a public restroom for 1RMB (roughly US$0.14) and had the pleasure of squatting to go to the bathroom! That was a first (in a real restroom anyway, woods don't count), and not really a pleasurable experience. Anyway, it was HOT today, probably around 86F degress (30 celcius), but overall a beautiful sunny day in Shanghai. I am very tired!

The Old Town is very touristy, with foreigners and Chinese nationals alike. Lots and lots and lots of shopping. And lots and lots and lots of people! It was very busy and crowded, but I really liked it. Before I hit up this area, I wandered through some streets near the SBB office building (which is in the HuaiHai Tower, in case you were wondering) where people had lots of antiques, but also a lot of junk. That was enjoyable because there weren't many tourists at all. I bought a really neat wooden carving Buddha statue which cost close to nothing. Overall I'm happy with my purchases today, which also include a funky turquoise necklace (i LOVE turquoise jewelery), and some things I can't mention in case my friends and family are reading this...it's a surprise!

Well I am kind of homesick! I still don't know when I'll be leaving. Zack sent me some pictures of Pita and she's becoming great friends with his cat Kitty. I'm happy because they weren't getting along for a while! I miss her!!
