Leon Lai Ming was born in 1966 in Beijing. He is descended from the Mui region of Guangdong.
Leon immigrated to Hong Kong and went to study at a boarding school in Britain at the age of 15. He returned to Hong Kong at age17, entered the Third Annual New Talent Singing Contest when he was 20 and won the third prize. He then joined TVB as a contract actor and appeared in television dramas, including Foundlings Progress, Song Bird, Cherished Moments, Challenge of Life, The Legendary Ranger, and Class of Distinction.
Leon was one of the most popular television stars at the time. His debut film performance was Four Loves in 1989. He starred in Michael Hui's The Magic Touch and Tsui Hark's Wicked City in 1990, securing a firm foundation in the film industry. Leon subsequently appeared in a host of films including Hearts, No Flowers, Missing Man, Fruit Punch, Fun And Fury, With Or Without You, The Sword Of Many Lovers, Love And The City, and Run.
Leon costarred with Michelle Reis in Wong Kar-wai's Fallen Angels in 1995, garnering recognition internationally. The following year saw him costarring with Maggie Cheung Man-Yuk in Director Peter Chan Ho-shun's Comrades, Almost A Love Story.
In 1998, Leon starred in Ann Hui's Eighteen Springs which generated rave reviews for his performance. Most recently in 2002, he was finally awarded the Best Actor award at the Golden Horse Awards for his role in Peter Chan's segment Going Home in the film Three.
Leon's film credits also include Killing Me Tenderly, God Of Gamblers 3: The Early Stage, City Of Glass, A Hero Never Dies, Sausalito, Skyline Cruisers, Bullets Of Love, and the Korean film Dream Of A Warrior.
Leon is also an important figure in Canto-pop music, and he was branded one of the "Four Heavenly Kings" with Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau, and Aaron Kwok in the 1990's. He was categorized as an pop idol for his good looks and has recorded countless albums including "Leon", "It's Love, It's Destiny", "Personal Feeling", "Hope We're Not Just Friends", "Summer of Love", "Between Sky & Earth", "Feel", " Why Aren't You My Future?", "DNA Gone Wrong", "If I Can See You Again", "Eyes Want to Travel", "Beijing Station", "Happiness", "The Red Shoes Evolution", "Now" and "Homework".
Leon has also directed many of his own MTVs with great success and recognition. He also produced and co-directed the movie 'Leaving Me, Loving You' with Faye Wong. He won the Best Actor for this movie in ChangChun.
