My heart feels sad....just really, really sad. Today someone I never personally knew passed away, losing her life to breast cancer......after an eleven year battle.
For those of you who don't know her, her name is Jane McGrath, married to our Aussie adored cricketer Glenn. She was diagnosed with breast cancer at the young age of only 31, and against the odds survived. She went on to marry the love of her life Glenn, and after being told she was unable to bear children, they had two beautiful children of their own. Throughout her life Jane became the public face of the battle against breast cancer. Jane and Glenn formed the McGrath Foundation, a charity to help raise breast cancer awareness, to provide support and educate young women about the disease, and establish and expand the role of breast care nurses. They have raised millions of dollars over the years.
Since her initial diagnosis Jane has again faced her battle with cancer twice. Throughout this time thousands of Australians have shared her journey. Together with Glenn, she has shared her feelings publicly on a few occassions, always with courage, grace, dignity and even humour. Her beautiful smile and positive personalty would simply shine through. She was adored by many. The depth of her love of life and for her family so plain and real for all to see...... she said there was nothing she wouldn't do or become to stay with her family.
Jane passed away this morning at the age of 42 with her husband and children by her side. For those like myself who have been touched by cancer in a very personal way, and for so many people, she was a ray of hope and inspiration. But in my eyes, Jane felt like my friend. I know that she achieved so much in her short life.......and was loved by so many.
But for now I just cry............. and feel so very, very sad. |

awww Kaybee,
I heard the news this afternoon about Jane and I was instantly saddened.
She was an inspiration to many, even those who have not been directly touched. She certainly was a beautiful lady nobody would ever doubt that.
My heart goes to her family who have already gone through so much, again the saying Only the Good Die young rings true....
...
I hope her death is not in vain and all the work she's done helps others.
But what a way to raise the profile....
I send my hugs to you, I know how close this is to your heart.
I love guys and wish I could ease a little of your sadness ..... xoxo

How sad. It sounds like Jane was a true warrior and used her illness for awareness and good. Not one mention of her passing here in the States. It's amazing how attached we become to people in the media. Just recently I cried rivers over the "to soon" death (at age 58) of journalist Tim Russert. I had never even watched his show, but still was devastated. We all grieved when Christopher Reeve passed and then again when his wife, Dana, lost her battle with lung cancer. Perhaps we attach a "super human" quality to those in the media. Their passing brings our own frailty front and center. Every human being knows how painful losing a loved one is. It's uplifting when our hearts reach out, in empathy, to a family we don't know personality. The light of human goodness can never be extinguished. Peace.

I have heard that women are getting breast cancer younger and younger. It's sad that we are mislead thinking you shouldn't begin mamograms until 40 or 50. I've heard alot of insurance companies don't pay for them until reaching this age group. I know they are trying to change this myth now. I have actually heard of a medical van or bus they do these tests in free of charge in lower income places. Just like the trailers or things they park to encourage people to come and donate blood. I think its a wonderful idea!
I have been touched by cancer myself at a very early age. Not breast cancer but none the less cancer.
I also watched a show once that a girl at the age of 20 had breast cancer. Also daughters of women that have had breast cancer have opted to have all the breast tissue removed before they could be the next victom in that family.
I'm very sorry to hear about Jane. Never have heard mention of her here in the US. I'm sorry your so sad and it really is a heart breaking reality when you loose a friend or hear such a sad story that touches your life personally. I pray your heart is held by God while you grieve.
