The other day something struck me.....you know how it is when something liitle happens and it just makes you think about things? Things maybe we just take for granted each day?
I was at my local shopping centre running around with a list of things to do, but nine times out of ten I always stop for a coffee, like E2S I too confess, I am a COFFEE SNOB! Anyway there I was, sipping my caramel latte and I find that when doing this, I just love to sit and watch people around me. I find myself wondering about them, are they married,I wonder what they do for work, who their family's are, where do they live etc. Weird?? I'm not sure, but anyway.....
An old lady came to sit beside me. She was small and frail, most likely a pensioner and I could see by her hands she suffered from arthritis. As she put her cappucino down on the table her hand slipped, and the cup crashed to the floor. Yep, coffee went everywhere and the cup smashed on the floor. I jumped up to help her with serviettes, while the coffee making "chick" wandered over with a mop, full of enthusiasm!! NOT!!
I think the old lady probably felt a little embarrassed because she didn't lift her head up, but started to pack her things up to leave. Now am I softie, but a well known coffee chain who makes millions of dollars each year and they didn't even offer to make her another coffee!!??? They had seen exactly what had happened but were quite happy to watch her leave empty handed!!
Now I am being honest here, this is something I've never done before but for some reason I just had to reach into my bag and fumble with my wallet. I quickly grabbed some change and offered this lady the money to buy herself another coffee. As I said, I don't know exactly why I did it, I've never done that before. I don't know if she was frazzled, embarrassed or surprised but she kinda just took the money, I think she mumbled thanks and off she went to the counter to order another coffee.
I finished my coffee, grabbed my things, and wandered off to continue my shopping...........but gosh it felt good to do something nice for someone else!!! As little as it was, just the chance to unexpectedly help someone else felt really nice and yes, it gave me "warm fuzzies" inside. It lifted my mood for the rest of the day and you know what? I'm going to try and do those unexpected nice little things a bit more often. :) |
