Sunday 22nd February....
Australia's National Day of Mourning.
"Together for Victoria"
The day when Australians unite and have chosen to pause,
to remember all those who have tragically lost their lives
in the horrific bushfires these past two weeks.
We remember each and everyone of them.
We pick up the newspaper and see
so many smiling faces looking back.
Grandparents, parents, teenagers and children.....
we have lost so many children.
Currently the death toll stands at 209.
Approximately 120 more people are missing.
More than 8000 people are homeless and still,
the bushfires continue to burn.
We pause to remember those who have lost everything,
but escaped with their lives.
Their families, friends, pets and homes may be gone,
and a lifetime of memories destroyed in rubble and ash.
Yet these memories will remain alive in their hearts.
We pause to remember those brave souls
who battled these blazes with so much courage and heart.
Although against a formidable force,
their efforts were not always in vain.
We thank our neighbours from around the globe...
USA, Canada, New Zealand, Indonesia,
just to name a few,
who have come to help us in this battle.
We pray as their fight continues even now,
that they stay safe and unharmed.
We hope all those touched by the bushfires
find the strength they need to go on.
To be able to deal with the aftermath of what they
witnessed on these horrific days.
One step at a time...
One day at a time.
Together we unite with the will to go on.
To clear the debris and rubble.
To once again,
rebuild these communities
and their lives.
One by one if we have too....
but we will do it.
And we'll do it together,
because that's what people do...
that's what Australians do.
We will never forget......
