Last night was an extremely busy night in the Emergency Department in which I work. Yes.... I am still awake and on the go now, but I just simply needed to write this out before I catch a couple of hours sleep.....
We had everything in the ER last night. A 9 day old baby who yesterday was discharged from the intensive care unit of another hospital only to return last night ..... to a ninety one year old lady full of spunk and cheek..... and beyond confused for no apparent reason!
During the night the "Bat phone" rang a few times. Yes, the sometimes dreaded Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance phone which only ever rings to tell us to prepare for something serious.
In they bring an 89 year old lady who had been resuscitated by the paramedics. Her heart had stopped and she wasn't breathing when they eventually reached her following her sudden collapse at home. After some time and many drugs and advanced life support procedures later... the ambulance officers were able to restart her heart and breath for her by another means.
During the night we did every conceivable procedure available to this lady to keep her alive. She was unconscious and on a ventilator.... surrounded by so many pumps, cords and machines one could barely see her small frail body underneath.
At one point I stopped and actually thought to myself.... what are we doing here? Why are we doing all this?
A few hours later her grey haired elderly husband who had frantically tried to revive her only hours earlier stood by her bed. He looked like a small child.... unsure of where to look, what to do, where to touch or what to say.
And as he tentatively leaned towards her and patted her hand with his own, I knew exactly why we do what it is that we do..... even if it is only giving someone the chance to say goodbye, to the one they love so dearly.
