I love tofu, but I also love meat. I am not the biggest fan of chicken if I have to prepare it, but I will eat most kinds of meat. Most, not all.
When I was in 4th grade, I think was 9 or 10 then, I was traumatized by my father. Every summer he would throw a company picnic for his construction company. Most of his workers did not speak English, but it was always so fun. And I love how nice they all are. Anyway, he threw the picnic this particular summer by a lake about 2 hours from our home, because it was closer to where all the employees lived. It was your regular picnic, all the goodies and fattening foods. And a pig.
Yes, a pig, a whole pig. Head, legs and tail intact. My father had a pig roast, and he roasted the pig himself for hours. Normally, this wouldn't stop most from digging in on the wonderful pig meat, but it stopped me. I clearly remember the pig lying on the table, flies and everything. I think there was like some goop or something dripping off the table. This first made me think GROSS! I came over to the table to get my cut of the meat, and my father decided to be funny.
This is always scary, as he is never funny whether he tries to or not. As I am looking at it, probably with the worst look on my face, my dad says, "do you want the leg?" What? No I don't want the leg, I am 10 years old. He pulls off/chops off the leg and decides to chase me around with it. I was not laughing, and I think the employees were because he is the boss. Not because it was funny. Finally after a couple moments, he stops and takes a big bite out of the leg, the leg with the hoof and everything on it. Oh my God, kill me now. That was the most disgusting thing I had ever seen.
Needless to say, I didn't eat anything that was once an animal. I didn't eat a bite of meat until I was 20. I learned to love tofu and polenta, and still do. I once was a vegetarian, for about 10 years.
