City Department Heads Find Amulets in Baguio City
Last June 10 to 11, heads of offices of the San Jose City government led by the City Mayor herself, Hon. Marivic V. Belena, trooped to the cold City of Pines for a two-day seminar on "Agimat", a spiritual retreat conceptualized by Fr. Ted, a Jesuit professor at the Ateneo and some devoted Atenistas, young and old, who have found their life's calling serving the wretched of the earth.  The retreat was held in an Assumption convent nestled on top of a hill.
I was touched by one of the female facilitators who turned her back on a corporate career to care for children cancer patients after a harrowing experience with a young boy who finally succumbed to the illness.
I found the experience an eye-opening one, at times disturbing, as our teachers/guides repeatedly exhorted us to refrain from graft and corruption and all that.  Were there nerves touched?
Mayor Marivic was her usual self: ebullient, hopeful, eager, shedding tears at times as she reflects on the pitfalls of public office.  But she was game all the way, joining in all the group dynamics, listening to lectures, even playing "tumbang preso, piko, and luksong tinik" and dancing the tinikling as part of the leadership training aspect.
