 Sunrise 6-4-08
I'm watching the sunrise and thinking I should have something profound to say about such a glorious sight but I don't.  Its just awe inspiring and beautiful.  As I watch the colors of the sky turn with the rising of the sun, I am reminded of my time in Kentucky.  Its a land locked state and while both the sunrise and sunset could be breathtaking, I missed watching the sun set into the ocean like I can do here in Oregon.  I have watched the sun rise over the Atlantic but its just not the same as watching it set into the Pacific.
I would have to say, most everyone I know who lives in the Northwest, whether a native or transplant... believes, our part of the lower 48 is the most beautiful in the country.  I'm not saying other places don't have beauty... but here, especially in Oregon, we are truly in God's Country.
From where I live, I can drive just a few hours in any direction and see a complete and total change of landscape.  Not many other states can claim such diversity within their boundaries.  If I head to eastern Oregon, I can walk through the desert, a lava bed or the high country.  If I head to the west, I will come to the Pacific Ocean and from the northern most point, to the southern, the diversity continues.  To the north, we have the point where the Columbia River meets the Pacific.  All along the coast are points said to be the end of the Oregon Trail.  Lewis and Clark were very busy indeed!  To the south, is an area known as the Banana Belt where the weather is fairly constant all year long... from the mid 50's to the high 70's and always with an ocean breeze to caress your face.  We have the Willamette Valley, lush and green with magnificient forests, fields and the Willamette River.  We have the Cascade Mountains running through the center of the state.  Mt. Hood, Mt. Jefferson, The Three Sister's and more, snow capped and just waiting for a pair of skis in the winter or hiking in the summer.  We have wonderful lakes to fish, huge sand dunes to play on and friendly people to greet you along the way.
Yes, as I sit here watching the sunrise... I am reminded of how lucky I am to live in the most beautiful spot in the world... at least in my opinion.  I love it here... I always have, and I always will... I'm a native Oregonian, can you tell?  I have all that is good about this state running through my veins... its simply gorgeous and I couldn't ask for more...
So, wherever you are... enjoy your sunrises, your sunsets and everything in between... because that's what I'm doing right now.
