| Quincy Floods... WHAT NEXT?!!
|
|
|
My daughter and her family and my son live near Quincy, Illinois, and she emailed our extended family the following:
Hi All!
I just wanted to say thanks for all of the prayers. There are a lot of
people here who need them! Our house is fine and will continue to be
fine. We live in a high area and our house will not be in any danger.
My brother and his wife also live in our town, and they will be fine as
well. My brother, my husband and my work will be OK, but my sister-in-law works in an area that
would be lost if the levee does not hold.
This morning there were several levee breaks, one actually in Quincy.
They are reporting that it mostly effected farm land, but what they mean
is Farmland and all of the farm houses that go with it. And around
here, the farm houses are much more densely populated. Most of the
houses are less than a mile apart.
From my brother's workplace, we were able to watch the water flowing through the
levee (we were up on the bluff away from danger). The break had
expanded to about a half mile wide. You could hear the water roaring
through the break. It just swallowed up the land in front of our eyes.
I am worried about the water supply in Quincy. They say we should be OK
for the current projected crest, however if it rains the projections
could rise. If they loose the water plant, there will be no water for 2
months....Drinking water can be distributed, but this would mean no
toilets or showers....so things could get a little hairy! I think this
is the effort they are focusing on most, as it would be the most
devastating effect at this point.
They have several national guard units that have been deployed to help.
I believe it is mostly to keep order in case the worst does happen.
I have seen pictures of the insides of buildings and houses after the
flood recedes. I think the pictures of the outsides are very deceiving.
From the outside it appears as though the building just needs a little
scrubbing and it would be OK. Meanwhile the insides are ripped to
shreds with everything remaining covered in thick goopy stinky mud.
There will be a lot of work to be done for the next several months.
My five year old daughter and I are planning on serving meals this Saturday. There are a
lot of volunteers and displaced people that will need to eat.
We are all just waiting it out. I think at this point I would prefer a
tornado. At least you don't have to hear about it coming for a week,
watch it slowly destroy everything and then wait for it to go away. I
am guessing that we will be well above flood stage until the end of
July. But the worst is anticipated to be over Friday.
Thanks for you prayers!
Love,
A

I am praying for you all! NEVER ASK WHAT IS NEXT! I'm afraid you'll find out. That has always happened when I've asked that question in the past.
