Okay I love Australia, even though I feel that my heart belongs somewhere else, (Hmmmm I wonder?) And this weekend is a long weekend being that it was Australia Day on the 26th. A quick history for those who may not know, Australia Day commemorates the founding of the first white settlement in Australia in 1788. (Okay that’s all for now, class dismissed).
Now this year Australia Day has landed on a Saturday. So celebrations are wild. And that is all well and good. But could someone please explain to me why we need to have a public holiday on Monday for Australia Day. It was bad enough that everything was closed on Saturday for it, but now again on Monday.
Have we become a nation that is so lazy that we have to have public holidays on a Monday for everything? As it is I think that we have too many public holidays. I wonder if there is any other nation that has so many public holidays in one year. I know that in Victoria there is 11 public holidays through out the year. Yes granted that included Easter and Christmas. But I just don’t see the point in making a day a public holiday if it falls on a weekend.
But I know I am probably the only person that feels like this, so this is my own rant. Though I do wonder if there is anyone out there that does feel the same way. I doubt it very much.
