One Step closer to death
Sometimes someone says something and I think, what were they were thinking. Other times I think are they serious with what they have said, and on very rare occasions I am just stunned by it.

Recently I had the misfortune of hearing a sentence that stunned me, so much so that I thought I would blog it, just to make sure my judgement wasn’t being clouded.

In this world of modern medicine, and scientific fact we all know and have heard the dangers of smoking. And no this isn’t a verbal bashing on those that choose to smoke. I am not one to preach, as I was once a smoker. And yes I choose to smoke even though I knew the dangers, and one day I stopped. (And I haven’t looked back). Yes I have been tempted in times of high stress, but stood my ground and didn’t give in to temptation. But these days it isn’t hard to be touched by cancer.

You either know of someone who is going through it wether it is a family member or friend or an associate. And it touches us one way or another. Some choose to through the habit, while others choose not too.

My friend’s family has been touched in just this sense, they have had another family member who has battled cancer and won, and of course there is me, they know me. The immediate family has asked on a number of occasions if the mother would seriously tackle giving up smoking. They have a son who doesn’t smoke (son is older, so could if he choose to), the father doesn’t either. So it is just the mother. She spends most of the night outside as they won’t allow her to smoke inside. And if anyone else comes to the house they too have to smoke outside.

So now for the kicker, once again it was brought up about her quitting. And she replied with
“I have thought about it, but decided not too”
when asked why that decision her answer was this
“Well when my mother gave up she got sick”.

Okay granted I am not 100% sure on what her mother got sick with/from. But every time the wife lights up another cigarette isn’t she increasing her chances of getting cancer, and if not cancer some other smoking related illness. She is still young enough to be able to allow her body time to correct part of the damage that has been caused.

Is it just me or is there something warped in her way of thinking.

You are correct
but like I was going to disagree...LOL
But seriously I am really sad that someone would feel that way. The funny thing is back in the 40's they actually said smoking WAS good for you!

Yeah seems like an odd statement without more detail, but some people are genetically more inclinde toward addiaction and have significantly greater issues with withrawl than most.

yeah I have seen some of the old stuff from back then, doctors suggesting people take up smoking to help with stress, and subscribing laudenum(Opium disolved in alcohol) to quieten babies.

I've heard that before and as an ex smoker myself, I know that people make all sorts of weird and wonderful justifications to themselves to continue with their own self destructive behaviour.

I applaud you for quitting!
Your friend does have faulty thinking.
Most smokers do as you know.
My mother smokes also, and heres a kicker for you, she smokes, she has COPD among other things, and is on oxygen. She had quit a year ago, then when I went out of town for a couple weeks she started again because she was bored. So not a good reason to smoke but now she is about to quit again (so she says).
I am trying to quit, and heres another excuse, its hard and my will power isnt as great as I would like it to be. I am weak weak weak!
Good luck to your friend.

I reread this twice and I have watched the elders in the nursing homes go from 2-3 packs a day 40-70 years of there life and then get 2 cigs a day because it is bad for there health. Well I have witnessed it and have thought the same thing... quiting like that is what kills them. Shocks their body!
