One thing I am starting to realise about life, and I have always known this in my heart, is if you want to get something done with no ties- you have to do it yourself. The moment a relationship is formed where the reliance is based on the knowledge and generosity of another- the moment you become the weaker person and if you are anything like me, the guilt of not being able to return the generosity with the same amount of effectiveness kills and it de-motivates me. I become more concerned with balancing the relationship than getting on with the task in hand. This is why I am motivated to become an independent; it is what I like about the new age of the music industry. I am a spec of dust in the big picture and I feel incredibly daunted by the challenge that lies ahead but I wont let this stop me and I will succeed.
To date, I know very little about the world of electronics and it’s equipment. I know even less about equipment for music studios. I’m one of those types of people that if I do not want to know about something, I am unable to give it more than 5 minutes of my attention, which as far as I’m concerned, is fine. I made the choice not to learn about the music studio when I had full access to one because my mind was being consumed with a different interest. Now it is very important for me to know and the Internet and some friends are shall be my guide.
Let me tell you where I am currently standing on the long road ahead:
5 minutes ago I didn’t even know what the name was for the wire that plugs into the back of the speakers! After a little Internet research I know now that they are called ‘Speaker Wires’ and they can be bought with connectors or without connectors. Great, now which wire do I get???
One choice I have out of many is the following, but what the hell does it all mean?
- 20 foot spool
- Magnetic Flux Tube construction with wide dynamic range and good low frequency signal performance
- Gold pin connectors attached
AAAaaaaarrrrgggghhhh!!
All I want to do is get the sound out of my speakers and at this point I haven’t a clue about wires! It suddenly dawns on me how big the challenge is I face.
Not only am I faced with the prospect of ‘what wires to get’ – it is also the question of how the wire will affect the sound before it gets to the speaker!
One thing I must do is look into the role of the speaker in the studio. The speaker is a very important part of the home studio – it is what outputs the SOUND and every bit of detail relating to my speakers must be researched.
SOUND
I have my speakers and now this is what I need to do in order to get the best possible use out of them.
On my list of things ‘Girl Better Know’ are:
- what are the dynamics of my speakers?
- where best to place the speakers and what to place them on/in?
- what amp3 to use?
So that is my goal today to find as much information to answer questions 1-3 so I can get the sound basic understanding for my studio.

Sound is Not Easily Remembered
Humans cannot easily remember sound quality if any time has passed in between. The only way to test audio fidelity is to switch back and forth between two systems playing the same music. It is almost impossible to accurately compare the quality of two stereo systems by listening to one and going to a different store to hear another. It is a rare individual who has that auditory capability. In addition, what sounds good in the showroom may sound entirely different in the home.
