The King of Israel had just finished building a permanent home for God's Spirit to rest. God came and spoke to King Solomon after the dedication ceremony. He basically told Solomon that when Israel is struggling He would heal and the restore the nation to what it was, but there was a condition. God said, "if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land," and He goes on to speak of His love for the people, "I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that my Name will be there forever. My eyes and heart will always be there."
That was about 4000 years ago I think... maybe a history buff can correct me. Since Jesus, though, who lived about 2000 years ago, God says that His temple is now in human hearts. When we're not experiencing the rains and harvests-- so to speak-- that we need to flourish, we need to follow the same principles as the Israelites did so long ago. We need to humble ourselves, seek God's face and turn from any sin that might have crept into our lives. God has chosen and consecrated the temple of our hearts and longs to be welcome there. We just need to make sure we keep it clean and swept and treat it with the respect that it's due, so that it can receive God's holy presence.
This story's found in the Bible in the 2nd book of Chronicles, chapter 7, verses 11-16. Go read it for yourself.
