I wonder how many people engage in malicious gossip everyday - sometimes without even knowing it? How many of us deflect the gossip when it comes to us? How many of us will say something similar to: "I don't care much for gossip, so I'd appreciate it if you leave me out of the loop. I prefer light over darkness."
Work. . . sigh. I work as a correctional officer in a prison that is plagued with malicious gossip. It's an unstoppable malignancy. My shift is comprised of 75 percent gossipers that look for darkness in others and then broadcast what they see and hear to their click members. So many of my shift officers thrive on hating and disliking other officers. Sad, isn't it? As a matter of fact, several officers can't even work with some people because they are consumed with hatred. Granted, there are some difficult people on my shift, but they are basically decent people who have a positive side.
No person is perfect. We all have our shortcomings, but it is unfortunate that many of the officers on shift are unable to look in the mirror to recognize this fact. When we point the finger at someone, we have to remember that there are three pointing right back at ourselves. Point your finger and you will see what I mean. So, why do people persist in finding fault in others? Why do they spread hatred?
Laughter. .. . how I love to laugh. Wouldn't it be a lovely place to live if people would pursue benign laughter and light? Personally, I'd look forward to going to work if I knew I was going into an environment of positive people who love to laugh as much as I do. As it is, the thought of work is undesirable because of the recent surge of malicious gossip. Argh! On comes the "armor of God."
Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for
edification that it may give grace to those who hear it.
-Ephesians 4:29
A soothing tongue is life to the body, but perversion in it crushes the spirit.
-Proverbs 15:4
From the same mouth come both blessing and cursing.
My brethren, these things ought not be this way.
-James 3:1
