Let
(Meet It With Faith, by Martha Smock)
When God created the world the word He used was let. "Let there be a firmament . . . Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together unto one place . . . Let the earth put forth grass . . . Let there be lights in the firmament of heaven . . . Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth . . . Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind . . . Let us make man in our image and after our likeness."
We, in creating our individual world, sometimes do not use the word let; rather, we scheme, we plan, we strive to attain our ends and control it. We feel that we have to battle to attain some desired good, and then we believe that we have to fight to keep it.
All we ever have to do is let goodness in. Where we have stormed and pounded on the gates of heaven, now we learn that heaven is within us; and the door opens inward, it opens easily smoothly to our word let.
To let God take over in our life is to surrender and be set free from dependence on our human powers alone; it is to let ourself be God-inspired, God infilled, God directed.
Life is really a process of "letting go and letting." This is the divine rhythm, the expiration, the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
We need continually to let go of any negative beliefs, any destructive emotions, any tendency to resist change; and we need continually to let -- to let the Spirit of God take over in us, to fill us with new life, to recreate us in mind, body, and spirit.
We resist change, we do not want to see the infringement of new ways, new ideas. Here is where we need consciously to let go, to declare our willingness to let go and let God, to declare our complete faith and trust in God, which we have been denying by our fear of change, our fear that something will interfere with that to which we have become accustomed. Let us turn to God in complete trust. Let us surrender ourself, commit ourself to His love and infinite goodness. Let us say:
Father, I let go of fear, I let go of all that has limited me or bound me. I let go of my personal will, my self-pride, my determination to do things my own way. I let go of self and let Your Spirit take over in me." Let becomes a creative word for us as we say in faith and without fear: "Let there be light in my mind; let there be light in my life."
If we find ourselves in a situation that is inharmonious, if we are disturbed and upset by what someone else has said or done to hurt us or cause us to suffer unjustly, we need first of all to let go, to let go deliberately of all belief in the power of anyone to hurt us or make us unhappy, to let go of any belief in injustice or suffering. And in letting go we open the way for an inrush of God's healing, transforming love. We let God take over in us, in the situation, in everyone concerned; and in letting go and letting God we find peace and joy of Spirit.
We are meant for joyous, happy, healthy living. We were created in God's image and after His likeness. Let us remember this. Let us let God take over in us, infill us, inspire us, renew us. Let us let His creative Spirit transform us into new and livings souls. Amen.
