Court Ruling a Bloody Blunder.
There have been more fights on the yard and several of the buildings are under lockdown. Violence seems to be a common occurrence these day at the unit. Much of the violence is attributed to a court ruling rendered by a female judge. Arizona prisons used to segregate sex offenders and gang-affiliated inmates from general population. The Department of Corrections can no longer segregate given this new ruling. As a result, the department has been slowly reintroducing gang-affiliated inmates and sex offenders back into general population. General population inmates are aware of this court ruling and are quick to attack any sex offender recently placed on their yard. Once again, the assaulted sex offender must be segregated until he heals. Once healed, this same inmate will be placed on another gp yard somewhere else, only to be assaulted once again.
In addition, gang wars are on the rise among GP inmates. Segregation kept these types of incidences from occurring on the GP yards. Given this recent court ruling, segregation is a thing of the past and gang wars and bloodshed are the wave of the present and future on our prison yards.
Any time an inmate assaults another, officers have to respond. Responding officers have to intervene and restrain the individuals involved. It is not uncommon for an inmate to turn on one of the responding officers. Not only has this new court ruling increased the violence on the prison yards, it has also increased the risk of officers getting injured.
