At what cost is this child pursuing knowledge, for the betterment of themselves or for the encouragement of the adult? Are we teaching children that being smart will garner praise or interest of those around you? I guess it is better than teaching children if you smoke you will garner the attention of those around you, but how can we instill in the children a personal thirst for knowledge where the only satisfaction is to that of their own and not of that which wishes to be accepted and "praised?"
