So Sasha and Malia are finally getting their dog. According to reports, the dog is set to arrive at the White House on April 7th - and they are seeking a rescue Portuguese Water Dog. There is a picture of it on the internet, and it looks familiar, but I have to say I have never heard of the breed!

The White House said that they chose the dog because they know people who have the dog and it is considered quite good with children - a good family dog. Mrs. Obama said that it is also a medium sized dog which fits well with what they are looking for.

I wonder why no one ever picks a big ol' dog. If it was me - you have that big old house - I'd get a mastiff or something absolutely huge and shake them all up! Although I have to laugh that the girls came up with the idea of calling him Frank or Moose - and Mrs. Obama said no to both names! If the dog they are getting is like the dog in the photo - I cannot think of two more unfitting names - especially Moose!!

Either way, I am excited that they chose a rescue dog! There are so many dogs out there in need of a home - and let's face it, the Obamas could have gone to any breeder in the country and gotten a great dog. In fact I am sure that they got multiple offers of dogs – people probably even offered to breed them specifically for them. But I think that the choice of getting a rescue dog is not only sweet and humane, it is a comment on his politics and where our country is headed. The fact that the least of us will be taken care of is spoken loud and true with this choice. And yes, I realize it is only a dog, but it speaks volumes.
