Would We Go To War for Oil?
Would you want us to go to war over oil if our very survival depends on it?

I would not.

We can live without our hair dryers, TV’s, radios and microwave ovens. It’s been done in the past. What did we do before we had washing machines, cars, airplanes and computers? We survived.

A lack of oil will cripple our power plants, but we’ll learn to live without electricity.

The early pioneers did it. So can we.

They survived without running water too. We’ll just dig our own wells and use old-fashion hand pumps to draw the water up from the ground.

Eventually the pumps will falter without oil to keep them lubricated and protected against rust, but that’s what buckets are for. It’s really not a big deal.

We’ll carry our water in buckets from a nearby stream, while praying the bucket doesn’t spring a leak. New ones won't be produced because the bucket-making factories will be closed. The same would apply to our silverware, pots and pans, glassware and dishes. We’ll learn to treat our goods with delicacy and respect, knowing that nothing can ever again be replaced.

The nearest hospital will be hundreds of miles away by horseback, so we'll learn to forage the forest for plants and roots to use for medicinal purposes.

Canning factories won’t be operating, so we’ll grow our own food. We’ll gather the seed by hand, dry it, and plant the next year's crop. Plows attached to horses will dig up the earth. Horses need to be fed and sheltered, so we’ll have to grow hay. Harvesting will be done by hand, with a sickle.

Storing the hay and sheltering the horses might be a problem. We wont have a barn because the saw mills will be closed due to a lack of oil needed to keep them running.

An old-fashion saw and axe will be vital for chopping the wood needed to build the barn. When the handles break we’ll carve new ones out of an old oak tree.

Hopefully someone will know how to forge new knife blades.

Our present houses will eventually be taken by rot, weather and age. Since the sawmills will have fallen to dust, we’ll have to figure out a way to build new homes without wood.

We can do like the pioneers did. We’ll build houses out of sod, and heat and cook our meals on wood burning stoves. We’ll treat them with care because they cannot be replaced either, nor can the wood splitting tools needed to cut our firewood.

Of course, unlike the pioneers, all of our work will have to be done during the daylight hours. At least they had fuel oil to keep their lanterns burning at night.

Refrigeration will not exist anymore, so we’ll preserve our food with salt. The need for salt on such a massive scale will eventually create a shortage.

Those who own the salt mines will realize what a valuable commodity they have. They’ll eventually raise their prices beyond reason. The salt owners might even go a little mad with power. They’ll threaten to keep all the salt for themselves.

Our whole way of life will be threatened. Without salt to preserve our food we will die. The only way to save ourselves will be to gather arms and declare war on the salt owners.

But surely, our survival is not reason enough to declare war. We’ll figure out a way to live without salt, just as we did without oil.

The cavemen did it. Why can’t we?

The United States has been going to war over oil for 60 years. That horse left the barn, a long time, ago. It isn't just oil. All raw materials are objectives in conquest. Read some of my previous blog entries like "War Under Heaven: The World at Commerce".
