So did you vote today.
I didn't.
First time I missed voting in many years.
Most don't vote in the local elections but we should because they are the ones that make sure the roads get maintained, sidewalks repaired ect., ect., ect.
As I read the local paper today it was going through all the local towns and townships Supervisor races. What I found interesting was what these people do for a living. A Town Supervisor is kind of like being a mayor in a city. You pretty much run the show and dispense the money.
I am not going to bore you with names of the local office seekers but instead just what they do for a living and what kind of money, in some cases these people will be in charge of.
Running for Millcreek Supervisor is an unemployed guy (Unemployed from what? IDK.) against a retired police officer. Millcreek is huge and has a budget in the tens of millions. It borders The City of Rust and is the place most of the well off people choose to live.
Running for Summit Township Supervisor is an electrical contractor against a maintenance guy for the local landfill. Again Summit Township has a budget in the tens of millions. It gets a huge check every year from the casino located there for over thirty million alone. If the casino gets the live tables law passed this year it will be giving a check for over fifty million a year soon.
Running for Harbor Creek Supervisor is an laid off shop guy and gas station manager. Harbor Creeks budget is in the millions of dollars. It borders the other side of The City of Rust and is where many blue collar people live.
Running for Conneaut Supervisor is an school bus driver, an mechanic, an housewife and last but not least an truck driver. Conneaut has a budget over a million bucks. This is the farthest away local township but it is like a small spread out city its self.
Running for Fairview Supervisor is an engineer against an surveyor. Fairview has a budget over a million dollars. This is also a place many of the well off people live.
Running for Waterford Supervisor is an meter reader and an guy who is retired (retired from what? IDK) Waterford has a budget of over a million dollars. When I grew up here it was a farming community. Now its a suburb with a small town in the middle.
Running for Girard Supervisor is an hair salon lady against plastic shop supervisor. Girard has a budget over 750,000$ This is small town USA with several large manufacturing shops.
Running for North East Supervisor is an grape farmer and an trailer park owner. North East has a budget over 750,000$ A wine making and farming community. Ever here of Welchs Grape Juice? Its made here.
Running for Mckean Supervisor is an road worker and an engineer. Mckean has a budget of over 500,000$ Very rural but its small town has a university with a division one wrestling program.
Running for Venango Supervisor is an beef farmer against an dairy farmer. Venango has a budget over 500,000$ Still a farming community with a intellectual institute that people like Albert Einstein used to call home. Al Gore and family spent a little time there recently.
Running for Greenfield Supervisor is an janitor against an mechanic. A bunch of house's.
Running for Amity Supervisor is an Unemployed guy (unemployed from what? IDK)) against an truck driver. Very small and rural.
Running unchallenged in Concord is a school bus driver. Very small and rural.
Whats my point?
First is that regular people are still getting things done in the small towns most of the time with out scandal and with out any recognition. They go to work all day and make sure the local park is taken care of at night. Regular Joes can handle lots of cash and make big choices. Shocking as this might be to some, your great education, does not make you that much better than those of us that bust ass after all.
I also am surprised that the lawyers, doctors and CEO's have yet to get into the politics of the larger towns and townships with big budgets.
