 H1N1 is no joke people.
I know many of you look at the Swine Flu as over hyped uselessness but it is going to be big.

The H1N1 virus known as swine flu virus to you and I could infect between 30 percent and 50 percent of the American population during the fall and winter and lead to as many as 1.8 million U.S. hospital admissions, the President's Council of Advisers on Science and Technology reported. The report says 30,000 to 90,000 deaths are projected as part of a plausible scenario involving large outbreaks at schools inadequate antiviral supplies and the virus peaking before vaccinations have time to be effective. Up to 40,000 U.S. deaths are linked to seasonal flu each year with most of the fatalities occurring among people over 65. With seasonal flu and H1N1 this fall is expected to bring more influenza deaths and place enormous stress on intensive care units nationwide which normally operate near capacity the report says.

An H1N1 coming back may happen as early as September at the beginning of the school year and infections may peak in the middle of October according to the report. However the H1N1 vaccine isn't expected to be available until mid-October and even then it will take several weeks for vaccinated individuals to develop immunity the report says. What? The potential mismatch in timing could significantly diminish the usefulness of the H1N1 vaccine the report says. Why in the hell is there going to be a mismatch?

"Even with the best efforts this will cause some illness some severe illness and unfortunately some deaths" Thomas Frieden director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday. "But a lot so far has gone remarkably right," Frieden said. "There's a vaccine well on its way to being distributed, diagnostic tests available in well over 100 laboratories treatments pre-positioned around the country ... and guidance issued for health care providers schools, businesses and other communities."

I guess I just don't care we have had over 6 months to get ready for this flu and were not ready yet WTF!

Among the report's recommendations are for government agencies to:

• Prepare several "planning scenarios" to determine demand for supplies and care. (Is this when you plan what groups die and what groups live?)

• Set up surveillance systems to track information about influenza-like illnesses.

• Develop plans to protect the public's most vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and those with pre-existing medical conditions.

• Speed up the production of the H1N1 vaccine and have an initial batch -- enough to vaccinate up to 40 million people especially those who are at risk of serious disease -- by mid-September. Do ya think?

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said the government's preparation and guidance for the public was based on the need to strike a balance "on a continuum of being paralyzed with fear versus complacency." Yea right like I should not be afraid of my kids dieing or anything after all you will plan out what groups live and die so I don't need to worry about it right?

So far clinical trials for the H1N1 vaccine have not indicated adverse side effects beyond what are experienced with the seasonal flu vaccine Sebelius said. However there would be no formal decision to launch a vaccination campaign until those trials were complete she said. Yea it would be better to die from Swine Flu than get a upset stomach. Good looking out Doc. That decision would be hers she said and she emphasized that any vaccination program would be strictly voluntary.

Pregnant women health care workers and parents or guardians of infants under 6 months of age are among the most vulnerable segments of the population Sebelius has said. Adults under the age of 65 with an underlying health condition such as asthma are also considered to be more at risk from the H1N1 virus.

H1N1 preparation guidelines for the nation's businesses and school systems were released three weeks ago. The H1N1 vaccine would require two shots the second three weeks after the first. Immunity to the virus would not kick in until two weeks after the second shot.

The World Health Organization declared the H1N1 virus a global pandemic on June 11. More than 1,490 people around the world have died from the virus since it emerged this spring a WHO official said last week. I think with this great planing that has been done for the up and coming flu season that number is ready to sky rocket.  Time to break out that sexy, useless doctors mask.

I guess this is a good time to ask, do you still want government health care?

Just saw this morning on GMA that the worst case scenario for the USA is 1/2 the population contracting it something lake 6 or 7 million(I think, I remember it was in the millions)hospitalized. They were saying as many as 60,000 dead. Mutations happen according to generations of the virus, with that many infected the chances of it mutation into a more danger form increases as well.

Hey did you ever do part 4 of your conspiracy theory? I looked the other day and didn't see it.

No I didnt. I for got about it to be honest when all the crap went down with my son. I will get to it in the next day or two. Thanks for the reminder.

Worth remembering that Seasonal Flu kills 250-500,000 every eyar, according to WHO figures. Also, to quote Professor Peter Openshaw, a flue expert at Imperial College, around 99% of people who get Swine flu recover without medical intervention.

Swine Flu is most definitely being talked up by someone. H1N1 may well be the same strain as the Spanish Flu that caused so much devastation after the First World War, but the medical systems in place, and public health infrastructure, were far less developed. I'm not panicking just yet.

I dont think any one should panic yet either. Just saying it should be watched close. I saw #'s posted by W.H.O. saying 1/3 of the world could die this winter from H1N1. No one agrees on the number that will get sick or die thats the scary part.

This should have and could have been erraficated early on.
The risks now increase as each day has gone on.
People have let their guard down. All rules wer broken. All the CDC rules have changed. No one is mentioning the mutation of the virus. No one seems concerned that the tests on these trial vaccines are not going to be as effective as one may think.
Yhe elderly are scared out of their minds. The elderly were covered in the last series of outbreaks. Now they are shall we say casted aside. Not having enough vaccine is the sickest thing to even imagine hapening in this country. Right now I cannot help looking at this as some sort of population control. Conspiracy theory? No. Just them laying out the facts and then contadicting themselves that back my thoughts up. I did too much work on pandemics and plagues in school. However we will still allow them to treat us as they do. I'm not takig the vaccine anyway even if I could.

I just heard today that the vaccine has a side effect on some that makes one forget how to breathe and/or loose other body control.

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. More Information:

Be as nasty as you can to your self so your body builds up against sickness.

Here are some H1N1 prevention guidelines. Most of the people here already know about the dos and donts. Just brush up your knowledge on the disease, check how much you actually know. And then please spread the awareness to people that do not know. Making others aware could save their lives as well as yours.

Hi all - had swine flu in London last month.
No idea how I got it - current thought is public transport - as no one else I know had it. Basic hygiene stuff needs to be followed, but if someone sneezes on the train, there's nothing you can do. However, by careful household management we prevented my family from getting it. And my flu buddy collected my tamiflu for me from the designated collection point...

And while it affects different people differently, even if you have it relatively mildly I'd say don't try to go back to work too early. I went back on day 6 (after finishing my tamiflu) but blacked out and keeled over, necessitating a further 1.5 days rest.
It's a whole bunch of no fun.

I gather that having had it this summer means that I still won't be protected if the virus mutates in autumn. Our government is apparently contingency planning mass graves etc. - but don't forget thinking the unthinkable is what crisis managment planning and contingency planning's all about - glad there's someone out there to do it as the risks of not planning ahead are much worse.
Happy days.

But I've made a full recovery, thanks.
