| Working hard, or hardly working?

It could be argued that I view work ethic (or any ethic) so seriously because I was raised by a single mother. And that may very well be the case, though some part of me would like to think I just AM this way.
Sure, my job, which entails making WHOPPER after WHOPPER at my local BK Lounge, is no glamorous career (not by any means), but I'd like to think that there is still at least a small amount of dignity and integrity that should accompany it. I'd like to think that after a year there I've paid my dues as the newbie, that now I am actually somewhat of an asset to the place. And that's why it angers me when people refuse to follow a few simple ethical guidlines.
For instance, why do people think that they are entitiled to free products? I personally am rarely offered anything for free and I really don't expect such generosity. If I can't afford something then I obviously shouldn't be purchasing it, it's as simple as that. No cash, no purchase. That's why it really gets my goat when people come in and want to use three, four, five coupons for free sandwiches or shakes or pies all at once, or when they sit in my drive thru and peel the sticker off and say, "I'd like to add my free Jr. to that order please." You JUST bought that drink and you are going to make all the cars behind you wait (not to mention kill my drive thru timer) just so you can get that free Jr. on this visit!?!? Why not save yourself the , what is it?, 370 calories today (seeing as you're already shoveling in another 1000) and come back another day so you can mess with my timer twice instead of just the one time!
Or the junior high aged boys that ride there bikes all the way to BK just so they can order their large FREE water (which you know they are going to fill with pop), just so they can do the peely and come up and claim a free apple pie or 16 oz. shake. That's ridiculous. I realize they are only 13 so they can't get jobs and therefore have no money other than what they can sqeeze out of mommy and daddy, but please. How sick is it that they would get FREE food after getting a FREE drink? Maybe I'm a freak, but even when it comes to something as simple as Burger King food, I don't expect freebies.
Another thing that irritates me to the core is people who don't know what real work is. I see people everyday get their first cars (or even their second or third cars) and all thanks to daddy's checkbook. Unfortunately for me, I've never been that lucky. When I get my car (which will hopefully be in 1 month) it will be because I worked hard and saved money. It will be because my grandmother is nice enough to take out a loan that I wil be making the payments on. It will because I've kept my mouth shut every time some punk kid comes in and gets a free large pop and free pie.
It makes me sick when I listen to people talk about how, "Oh I need a job so bad. I need gas money!" Yeah, for the car that your parents bought you! or "I can't belive I'm not getting more hours than this! I'm so unlucky!" Yeah, having your parents hand you keys to a car, having a job, having good grades, having a great boyfriend, having two family cottages, having a 50" flat screen tv is soo unlucky.
I know that there are people in the world who have it ten times worse than I can even imagine (look at Darfur), but I also know that there are people who have it ten times better than I do and they think they have it hard.
Honestly, the day that I get the loan for my car... and then the day that I make the final payment... I think that will be one of the happiest days of my life. I LOVE that feeling. Knowing that I worked really hard for something, knowing that in the end it paid off. Knowing that I am capable of anything I set my mind to.
It just worries me that so many of my peers aren't aware of that feeling. So many of them don't know what real work is. They don't know what it's like to worry about money or bills. The idea of not just being able to have what they want is so hard to grasp. Granted, everyone faces the real world at some point, and most people must do a halfway decent job of handling it (otherwise the world would be even more corrupt than it already is)... but I just wonder how all those spoiled little teens are going to make it when they realize that mommy and daddy aren't always going to be there for them to fall back on.
Sometimes I hate my mother for telling me about money problems and all that junk. But it's days like today, when I see the difference between me and my peers, when I see how I know what it's like to work for a paycheck (and see the taxes get taken out!) that I love her to death. She has taught me so much, and I owe any and all success I have now or will gain in future years, to her.
And only her.
Best of luck to everyone out there who get what they want when they want it. I hope that when reality comes knocking at your door, you're capable of handling it. |

i TOTALLY agree with you on how unnecessary it is for people to want their free items RIGHT NOW. like seriously, wait till next time to use the coupon or whatever. i work at a pizza place and people try to use a million coupons on one order. and when i tell them they cant do that, they make a family member call from a different phone number, just so that they can get their free small pizza. ugh. its so annoying.
and also, it is sooo aggravating when people dont work for what they buy. one of my friends comes from a wealthier family and she doesnt understand what its like for people like me to not be able to afford purses like the one that she just bought for $1940. honestly, it makes me sick to see her waste money on that kind of stuff. she simply does not understand what it is like to not be as fortunate as her.

Good for you. Work as hard as you can while you're young b/c you never know when you won't be able to work anymore. And, you lose energy FAST the older you get. My energy was cut in half two years ago when I turned 30. I know exactly what you are going through. One of these days those spoiled brats will be jealous of you. Their moms & dads won't live forever, and they will be stuck not knowing how to take care of themselves. In addition to this, their lives are likely to be much less fulfilling than yours.
