 Light in the darkness
I have a friend named Tony who has been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, along with MS.  It cost him his wife, his job, his confidence.  When he needs those things the most, they depart.  We can do better than this.  We are all in this together, and we can surely do better.

Tony is a member of a group of men we call "The Tree House."  It's a time when men can be boys and discuss our hearts, without feeling the need to protect ourselves.  Its actually an amazing dynamic.  Recently, Tony broke his leg and has not been able to come to the Tree House, so The Tree House came to him.  We all surprised Tony one morning and showed up at his apartment.  I was expecting a dark, gloomy place by the way he had described it.  When he opened his front door, I discovered a cute little place with a beautiful window overlooking a gorgeous oak tree where squirrels were playing.  A soft ray of light was shining through.  It inspired the following poem which I just finished and sent to my friend.  I thought I might share it here with you.

Tony's Window

An enveloping darkness threatens;
A shady impression, finding its greatest expression in total depression.
Dark.  Isolated.  Lonely.  Empty.
Eternal?

No boundaries here.  No protected class.
Every soul is prey.  Every heart is game.
No insulation from isolation, even in a crowd.
Alone.  All alone.  No one knows.  No one cares.

More frightening still, this endless evil
in the sanctum of our home.
No darker place on earth can be;
trapped there...all alone.

When a light comes shining through,
to chase away despair.
Tony's window, bright and clear.
How long has it been here?

For every darkness, there is a window
where rays of hope break through.
For every time you feel alone,
remember I am here for you.

that was beautiful. absolutely beautiful.
sometimes that "ray of light" becomes unnoticed when it becomes the background of what you see every day, simply unchanged.

sometimes if you take away the light and then re-introduce it you have a re-found value in what that light can do.

for instance, when i was in 6th grade i had a science fair project and what i did was study how much light change effected plant life.

Plants that had constant 24/7 light on them were growing rapidly at first and then they disapated into a dull stunted growth....their leaves became light lime colored and they began to wilt....

however the plants that were not introduce to light at all searched continuously for the slightest glimmer of hope. they had twisted stalks that writhed around in the boxes they were kept in searching in all directions for the slightest glimmer of light to survive...

Then, the plants that were kept in a continuous 12 hour/12 hour lighting were a nice healthy green color and grew not too fast but not too slow either. they were just reaching upward toward the light enjoying the beams they recieved.

after the project was up i took the plats that were in continuous light and let them stay in the dark for 24 hours...
when i re-introduced them to light on the 12/12 cycle they bloomed the most beautiful flowers. that is all they needed, a little darkness ....then they appreciated the light they recieved that much more...

and the plants that were in complete darkness finally found a crack to peep through and grow...and that small amount of the plat that saw that light had the most leaves on it, and it did not make as many flowers as the others, but it did bloom one vibrant and the most beautiful flower of them all.

i dont know how you might be able to link this to anything with your friends turmoils but possibly it might inspire you into a new wave of thought.
like you said, you try the same things you will get the same results :)
