 Lawyer Says I'm Screwed
Well, I had my appointment with the lawyer on Thursday and the news is not good. It seems the only way out of this marriage is through living in poverty. And this isn't just the normal divorced guy complaining.

He said that because my wife is on disability it creates a lot of unknowns. For instance, he said the court could order alimony payments that continue forever. On top of any alimony payment, it could also order me to pay any medical expenses that Medicare or something else wouldn't take care of.

Here's the kicker though: If she refuses to sell the house, and she has said she would, I would likely have to pay half of each of the mortgages because she wouldn't be able to afford it. This would create a bottom line of her having more money to live on than me each month while she sits at home and I work overtime just to afford a room at a hotel that lets you pay by the week. (And that's no exaggeration.)

My options as he outlined them were: A) Just stay in the marriage (Not an option to me) B) File for divorce and then he would file a motion with the court to try to force the sale of the home (He is not optimistic this would work) or C) File for divorce and, since she has said she will not sign divorce papers, stay here with her for two years until the divorce becomes final. (Imagine the fun that would be.)

I added to other options: Trick her into selling the house before filing for divorce. (Baby, everything will be better if we just sell this house....blah, blah, blah). The attorney liked that option.

I like the other option, which I call the Jimmy Buffet option. I just leave and take up residence far, far away. Step one is selling off what I own. Anyone need a table saw?

Or option 5# which I have considered:You just live life as if you are divorced. Live your life and just live in the house. Date, go out, do what you want and forget she is there. I am not saying neglect her per say, just in your head and heart this is already done. This might push her to file herself, she has no money and so she spends what she has on legal fees and you wait her out and she buckles quick.
Option 6#???? well if you do that I want to play the Billy Crystal role. Sorry guy but I am not playing Danny Devito....(LOL)

Deal with it, this is life. You had to marry her for some reason and now because you want something new or life is rough you want out. You made your bed now lay in it.

I would get a 2nd opinion. Divorces can be complicated but not impossible, not to the point of leaving you poor.

Best luck to you!
