| A Complicated Relationship
Thanksgiving was a great example of the complications in my life. My wife was up early to stuff and prepare the turkey, but by the time I got downstairs at 8:30 she was hurting and in need of pain pills. She really wanted to prepare the whole meal, but she just couldn't do it. My step daughter arrived around 11 and took over the meal preparation (she is an excellent cook and I can only fry things.) Football was on TV but we hardly watched as we talked for three hours until the meal was done.
My wife came back down and we enjoyed a great meal but as soon as we were done eating she had to go back upstairs and rest some more. I went to the store with N to pick up a piece of furniture she wanted to get (there was only one left) and I took it over to her apartment. I didn't stay long because she has to work early tomorrow. There was an innocent exchange of "I love yous" and hugs as I left and I went in search of a place to buy a six-pack, happiness and lonliness both slapping me in the face.
N was telling me about a friend of hers who is bothered a bit by his son's close relationship with his step father. We agreed that it was different for us because she was 18 when her mother and I married. (She already disliked her father.)
For most of the last 13 years we have had a polite but distant relationship. She came to me for things like car problems and furniture moving. I cared for her but didn't really understand where I fit into her life. I think that is because we both have trouble trusting others and expressing ourselves. Now our guards are coming down and we are in uncharted territory. Lord give me guidance.
