This summer my family and I went on a road trip from Colorado to Disneyland in Anahiem CA. On the way back we decided that we were going to visit the new attraction in West Grand Canyon, the Skywalk. It is a glass walkway in the shape of a horseshoe that hangs over the edge of the canyon so that you can look some thousand feet or so below your feet. When we saw it featured on the national news as it opened for the first time to the public we thought it would be a neat adventure for all, not to mention something to brag about to friends. So we set about obtaining information about where this attraction was, how much it cost and other specifics. At first it was hard to find the price on any of the websites that Google pulled up, but eventually we found that it would cost nearly $30 a person for 20mins and the line could be up to a two hour wait.
But it was something we very much wanted to do, so we saved and saved until the day of vacation arrived. The trip out was wonderfull, the weather was beautifull and everyone had a blast at Disneyland. On the homeward trip we picked up a map at made our way to the West Grand Canyon. After exiting the highway we found that it was a 22 mile treck down a badly made dirt road that wound and twisted it's way through the hot desert, until finally coming to the entrance to the park.
Dusty and tired we pull up to the window, ready to pay the $30 or some dollars to get to the skywalk and find that it's not that easy. Not only do you have to pay the $30 for the skywalk, but you have to take a two hour bus tour as well, for an additional $40!! That's a total of $70 a person, and a two hour bus ride through the park! Obviously we had neither time, or money to go through with the adventure so we turned around and went back, extreemly peeved at the fact that we had made the long journey without substantial information.
Now if you have read this far (and I thank you for doing so) you may be wondering how it came to be that we did not know of all these draw backs before, had we done our research we surely would have not gone way out there for nothing, or at least planned it better. Well we did do research, lots of it. And every website, brocher and advertisement that we looked into said the same, or similar thing. That it was about $30 a person, for aprox. 15-20min and no personal photos. Nothing was said about having to perchase a bus tour as well.
So the next time you plan a super adventure to West Grand Canyon, or something else out in the middle of nowhere, be sure to get all the information you can, and then still plan on something happening.
