I looked up into the sky,
streaked with orange and pink in the most magnificent way.
It could make you hold your breath as you look at it,
and think, gee what a good life I had on Earth.
But we weren't like that.
We were about to part, forever.
My fair lady was sitting beside me, hugging her knees.
She looked lost and faraway into the gentle rolling waves.
I looked down to my feet,
trying not to look at her.
But I couldn't resist.
I tilted my head slightly,
looking up.
My fair lady was still looking into the ocean.
The gentle sea breeze pushing her corn coloured hair from her shoulders.
As the seagulls squaked, I saw something that I never saw her did.
Tears trickled down her cheeks, sobbing slightly.
I looked on, not knowing what to do.
When women cry, I'm as helpless as anything.
She turned towards me.
She held my warm hand, rubbing it against her cold one.
Through her tears, she managed a wanly smile.
"It's silly of me to cry like this."
she had said and wiped her tears away.
I hugged her closer to me, her head resting on my chest.
The sun was setting, the beach's white sand had turned a bright orange.
Time was running short.
Suddenly, I heard a small whisper from my fair lady.
Her tone was fearful, never had she once been afraid, but now she is.
"I'm scared, I need you."
Her voice trembled.
I held her hand and squeezed it.
"I'll be with you."
I answered stupidly. I just wanted her to stop crying.
"But you'll be here, I'll be somewhere else."
I couldn't answer to that.
Silence had befallen us as we watched the sunset.
She sobbed again.
"I'm scared."
I didn't say anything, I had suddenly realized the reality happening.
How could I have been so stupid before?
She's never coming back.
My tiny voice inside my head taunted me,
echoeing the same words.
"She's never coming back.."
My fair lady's voice became softer.
She lay on my chest, looking up to my eyes.
Mine met hers.
"I love you."
she had said.
I stroked her beautiful hair softly.
"I love you too."
she had gathered not enough strenght to hostle herself up.
So I picked her up and gave her a light peck.
She smiled again.
I looked out to the ocean, thinking.
We met at the park.
I saw her face, that intriuged me so much.
Her mournful eyes, speaking to me.
And I would understand.
Her smile, so tender, so loving...
I awoke from my thoughts.
I saw her beside me, in a sleeping pose.
I felt for her breathing.
None.
I felt for her heartbeat.
None.
Tears started prickling in my eyes.
Oh God, please save her somehow.
I am a man, crying,
How silly.
I thought.
In a distant, I heard a faint laughter.
My fair lady's laughter.
I stood up hurriedly looking around and up.
I saw the clouds shapening into her beautiful face.
I could almost hear her, her tiny whisper with the wind that blew in my face.
I heard her say,
"I'll be with you...now and forever."
As I walked back home, my pain is still there.
But it lessened.
I breathed in and looked up to the sky.
I remembered what she said to me.
"When people die, another star appears."
Yes, that shinning star, is my lady's.
Shinning so brightly,
I could even hear her giggles.
Her words had echoed in me always.
"Now and forever." |
