Gold or Tin?
Any wrestling fan who tunes into Monday Night Raw sees the same thing I do. Randy Orton carrying the WWE Championship which is a leather strap with a gold spinner in the center of it. It's the same title belt that John Cena introduced to the wrestling world when he was the rapping cool marine gangster that boasted his "You can't see me" to each and every superstar on RAW. This belt to me is complete garbage...
The reason for this is simple. There is nothing behind it anymore. Nevermind the fact that it goes to whoever makes the most money and not to who is actually the 'best' in terms of wrestling. But the belt itself has no heritage. There is no history to it. And with the way the WWE changes things up, chances are it never will.
Championship Belts used to be an honor to hold. If you won it meant you were number one in that teritory. You got the belt that legends in the past had held. You are being given a top spot in the promotion. But that doesn't happen anymore. If you win the WWE Championship you no longer hold the belt once held in the air by Bret Hart, Steve Austin, The Undertaker, HBK, Hulk Hogan, etc... They don't use that 'Flying Eagle' belt anymore.... Instead you get a spinner... A hub cap on a strap... That is how I view the WWE Championship... It's nothing more then tin in my eyes. But who am I? I am just a fan... The WWE does not care about my opinion on the matter.
Big Gold
This is perhaps the one title still in wrestling that might mean something. It used to be the WCW Heavyweight Championship but it's now used to crown the number one champion on WWE's Smackdown! The title has been held in the hands of many greats including Ric Flair, Sting, Vader, Lex Luger, Hulk Hogan, DDP, Randy Savage, Booker T, etc... And the belt itself has stayed the same since day one. No one has messed with it (Besides the NWO painting it at one time). They havn't added a spinning plate or a fancy glob of diamonds to it. It is the same belt. It is classic. It has a heritage to it. Yet the WWE uses it to crown the number one man on their 'B' show. Go figure....
What I am trying to say is simple. Wrestling might not be 'real' but there is still a respect to it. Part of that respect is the championship belts and what they represent. A hard worker and the number one guy. I think that when the WWE swaps out title for title every so often they bring the value of that championship down from a heritage standpoint. Personally, I want to see the day when the WWE brings back the Flying Eagle belt...
Thats it for now. This is my first of many blogs and I couldn't think of much to write on but this. Hopefully I will have more ideas as time passes on...
