Talk about age  sex and racial discrimination: a sixty year old, hard working, long time employee of Intermet Corp. in Lynchburg, Va was fired for talking to the company president, who boasted an open door policy and would talk to anyone about any thing pertaining to the company at any time. actually she was canned twice.
Over the years Granny had gotten along with all her supervisors and co workers. She arrived at work on time did her job and went home, that is until she encounted a supervisor who wanted to replace her with a younger more "available" female employee. He started by assigning granny the harder, dirtier jobs and cutting her overtime in favor of the above mentioned. Granny filed grievances only to be chastised by the inhumane relations manager, her supervisor's friend. In the mean time, Granny was elected as a union shop steward, which only served to increase the personal attacks. As a shop steward she was authorized to report to management any discretion in the ISO9000 procudures. She observed a quality tag being signed off by an unauthorized supervisor. She took the tag long enough to make a copy to show management. For this, she was called to the office and terminated for stealing this tag even though it never left the plant and she had no intentions of keepiing it. The inhumane relations manager made the remark: "It will be a cold day in hell before she will be allowed back on company property." and he said that no way would she draw unemployment compensation, that he knew how to handle headquarters, the state and the government, and he had never lost a dispute. Well, a cold day in hell came early. Not only did he lose, the state of Virginia ruled that it was an unlawful dismissal and she was to be reinstated in the company at the same rate she was at when she was dismissed and that they would have a check ready for her the day she returned.Â
It was over two weeks before the inhumane guy even informed the person responsbile for writting checks that Granny ws suppose to get one. Actually, the lady didn't even know that Granny was back. They placed her in a position less then where she was before, two violations right at the beginning.
Earlier Grann filed a grievance with EEOC and that paperwork was beginning to filter into inhumane relations. One of her friends had called the president of Intermet and had talked to him and said that he would listen to the situation. So, she called him and asked permission to talk to him. His reply was that she could talk to him about anything company and employee related. So, they talked for about forty five minutes. a few days later Granny was called back into the office. The inhumane relations manager was levied, literly losing his cool, yelling and sticking the telphone in her face. granny was terminated again. She filed with VEC. Intermet responded by sending VEC fourteen pages fromn the employee and union manuals. The president of the local union had a meeting with the Intermet Corp. inhumane relations manager weeks before anything was done, without any minutes being taken or recording made of what was said. The local union president sent a letter to Intermet without Granny even getting to see what was in the letter. It was decided ahead of time what they would do to implement Granny's termination. This time, after six weeks the VEC carefully went through every page and decided to rule in granny's favor, again, finding that Granny had done no wrong. She received her first unemployment check.Â
Granny might just come out on top of this. If she doesn't it won't be from the lack of trying. EEOC is involved, so there will be an investigation, a hearing maybe even a trial. This could go on for years. intermet might just discover they picked on the wrong Granny.
What does Granny want out of this? She wants all of her lost back pay, a full retirement package and a written    apology from Intermet. She might just get it.
Granny was told by the national union rep. that he had contacted the union's attorneys and was told that she was unjustly terminated, go to arbritration, the only thing agains her was the statement from the local president. Granny told the national rep. that she wanted to file a grievance agiainst the local president for a false malice statement. This did not happen. The national rep made a deal with the inhumane manager for the statement not to go to arbritration or give Granny a statement for EEOC. Hope he got more than thirty pieces of silver for his sell out.Â
Granny filed with the National Labor Board. She was questioned for eight hours under oath and signed a twelve page affadavited. The union nor Intermet was asked a single question. They were given time and advised to clean up thier files. The Labor Board ruled both were not guilty and could continue thier practices.
Would you believe after three months the president of Intermet finally returned a promised phone call. Nothing came out of the call but venting. He actually stated that it was not a firing offense to talk to him but its obvious he doesn't have the spine to do anything about the situation. Guess the inhumane manager was correct in stating that he knew how to lie to headquarters and handle them.Â
Granny has written to the USW's president - Leo Gerald several times asking for a conference--also the president of theAFL-CIO-John Sweeney and Congressman Goode has asked him to contact Granny. So far, he has not. Guess when you are one of the "fatcats" and make over $200,000 a year plus all the benefits you can beg borrow or steal you don't have to talk to any of the "little people."
The supervisor that started the whole situaion has been promoted. The availble female that specialized in boob rubs and zipper pats is still employed and enjoying all her benefits. The supervisor also enjoys spending time in the parking lot and warehouse with another companion. All which is know to the front office .                                                         Â
